Student Loans & Obama Health Care Reform-What’s up with that???

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

Federally guaranteed student loans were changed substantially with the signing of the two health care bills by President Obama this week.  Now why student loan bills were in the health care legislation,  only  those involved can say.

That is way above my pay grade.  And for me to understand it, it would have to make common sense-also unheard of in Washington lately-regardless of your political affiliation.

The Wall Street Journal had this article about the school loans and the Health care law today.

Student Loan Changes in the New Health Care Bill:

  • The money for guaranteed school loans will, as of this fall, be from the Federal Department of Education-no more shopping around at different banks.
  • The maximum amount of repayment/year will  gradually decrease from 15 % of income to 10%,over the next 4 years. (Already true for nurses working for non-profit hospitals and clinics.)
  • The amount of money available for Pell Grants-(which don’t have to be repaid) will go up-although applications are up 20% this year due to the economy.  So apply quickly if you or your parents income levels qualify -(usually less than $50k/yr-but is based on family size.)
  • Provisions for debt management education, for low income recipients, was made to the tune of $750 million……
  • Private loans may still be available between you and your bank-but they will not be guaranteed by the feds.-so good credit will be required-especially in this economic environment.
  • A decrease in annual interest rate of 7.9% under the direct program, compared with 8.5% under the old program.

Finaid, a student loan website, has  good information about the status of student loans of all types, so check it out if you have questions.

Finances Need a Fix? “Retreat” May be Better Than “Charge”!

Friday, March 26th, 2010

Are your finances broken or in need a repair.  Maybe you need to get out of debt or can’t figure out how to save money-even though everyone is telling you-”save for retirement-your next car, college, new home….”

I think you get the drift.

So what do you do to get started????

As many of my regular readers know, I am an elected city council member.  We are at a city retreat today.  Finishing up a day and a half of planning for the future.  I find these meetings extremely effective in getting our city moving, in what the council and mayor thinks, is the right direction.  We come up with milestones, or parameters to make sure our direction is being followed….

So what does this have to do with managing your finances?

Well the problem with most household finances, is that nobody is thinking about next week,   next month or the next five years.

So what do you do?

Have your own retreat.

Cardinal Flower or Lobelia Cardinalis Found on our city's Nature Trail

Set aside time for you and your spouse.  No distractions allowed.  No kids, cellphones, televisions.

Personal Finance Retreat Agenda:

  • Where are you now?  In debt, drowning in bills, not being able to give to others?  Make sure you do a personal financial statement before the meeting.  Here is a link to my website where you can download a simple template of a financial intake assessment.
  • Set goals for your family, both financial and personal-remember many personal goals affect your finances-do you want to save for college, save for a new house, save so you can give to the hungry in Africa, or your church?????
  • Set a timetable for  your new goals.
  • Set a spending/saving  plan to match your goals.
  • Make as much of this become automatic-using technology and planning, so you don’t have to think about it.
  • Revisit your goals on a schedule-have a mini-retreat every three months.

Now you may say, we can’t agree on what to have for dinner at our house, how are we going to agree on our goals and plans.

Well, our council is made up a diverse group of economic, religious, and racial backgrounds.  But our common bond is that we genuinely love our city, and want to make it better for our children and grandchildren.

Does that mean we agree-far from it.  We have lively debates on the best way to spend the limited tax dollars that are becoming more and more precious every day.

So you and your family, at least the ones old enough to have a say, (which means they bring in money, or work in other ways to help the household), need to come to a consensus.

If you can’t come up with reasonable compromises-maybe you have someone who is addicted to spending, an alcoholic or drug addict-then you may need marital, or other counseling,  to help with those all too real issues.

So go have your own retreat.  Make a few tough decisions about your spending….

You will be glad you did!

Nurses, Can’t Get No Satisfaction?? The Millionaire Nurse Reviews the AMN Survey!

Nurses-Satisfaction with their career and profession

-This  recently released AMN Healthcare Nursing Satisfaction survey done late last year is full of important information for nursing as a profession.

The AMN Healthcare survey results:

  • A whopping  one out of four, (25% for you non-math people) are planning on leaving their current job within the year.
  • Three out of four were satisfied with their career.
  • About 50% felt like they had adequate time with patients-(Glass half empty or half full????)
  • Almost 50% felt like their nursing job was affecting their health.  (I’m sure it wasn’t for the better!!!)
  • Less than 10% planned on leaving the field all together!
  • More than half would still become a nurse if they had a “do-over”.
  • More than half would recommend their kids become nurses.
  • Less than 6% felt that health care reform would have much impact on their job.

What does this mean for “The Millionaire Nurse”?

  • If you are going to leave your current job, do your homework-make sure you are making a positive move.
  • If you are leaving nursing all together, then make sure you have plenty of money in your emergency fund.
  • If you are leaving to start your own business, then make sure you have a solid business plan, and plenty of capital and support, as over 90% of new small business’s fail within the first 5 years.

What can you do, if you don’t want to change fields, but are frustrated in your current job?

  • Be the best you can be, for you, not your organization.
  • Help your fellow nurses, (by being a mentor, a friend, or just help-(charting, answering the bell).
  • Be a “Linchpin” (see this book review)
  • Keep a journal of ways you HELP your patients and co-workers
  • Keep learning in your profession-journals, continuing education, and meetings
  • Join and be active in your local nursing organizations
  • Go back to school, advance your degree, find your passion.

And I can promise you, if your finances are a MESS,(yes that is a medical term!), it is hard to be a good nurse, mom or dad, student, or where-ever you are in life…….

So go get Emergency Money Resuscitation HERE-it is FREE, and it will be followed by more free stuff including my free mini-course on personal finance, and my Millionaire Nurse Money Letter.  I can guarantee it will save you money, if you put my tips to work.  Feeling like you are making a progress on your finances will also bring peace of mind.  Maybe even world peace-(maybe I exaggerate…..)

How can you get a copy of the survey discussed above for your self.  Follow this link to the AMN Healthcare site,  go halfway down the page till you get to the survey description, then sign up to be able to download your pdf copy-you do have to identify yourself…

Let me know what you think-about your job satisfaction, your career, and the direction of nursing. Leave a comment, and let’s have a conversation.

Online Checking:Is it for You?

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

Online Checking:

Online Banking has been around for years.  But as this article in the WSJ describes, Americans are now even  using them for checking services.  In the past, a service confined to local banks and branches.

As many customers become more accustomed to online financial transactions, we are less “afraid” of online banks.

They also have many things to offer, that beat bricks and mortar banks:

Benefits of Online Checking

  • no minimum balances to obtain interest on your money.
  • no ATM fees
  • charge less for international transactions
  • automatic features to prevent overdraft fees such as “sweep” accounts-that transfer money from savings to checking
  • no per check charges/free checks

Online checking with good reviews:

This is certainly not a complete list of available companies, but in my research these were highly ranked by personal finance bloggers, and consumer groups.

So how do you decide which to use.  Mainly use your own needs to help you.  What is most important to you?

What are your Online Checking needs/questions:

  • high interest rate because you tend to keep a high balance.
  • ATM fees or free overdraft protection.
  • Do you have to travel out of the country?
  • low or no minimum to start your account-maybe you want to start small and see how it works for you.

One of the main drawbacks to these accounts, is depositing money-you may have to mail checks-and wait for them to show up in your account-if you company can’t pay you online.  So your own personal habits are important.

Some companies are developing scanning software that will allow you to scan your check and email it to them, for more immediate deposit into your account, according to the WSJ article above-hopefully that will spread soon to other online banks, with checking.

Keep in mind-if you need “Emergency Money Resuscitation” my free e-book is still available-filled with tips for saving money today, right now!  It will also sign you up for my free newsletter-The Millionaire Nurse Money Letter, and a mini-course on personal finance.  So go, now while you have it on your mind!
