Money Management: 9 Ways Golf Can Help!

Golf and your money

Golf was in the news this week.  There were two story lines for you.

  1. The President, VP, Speaker of the House, and the Governor of Ohio played a politically charged foursome.
  2. A 22 year old ran away/crushed/obliterated the competition at the US Open Golf Championship-some would say the most difficult championship in golf.

What does golf have to do with personal finance?

Golf and personal finance

Let’s see the corollaries:

  • He who gets around with the fewest strokes wins.  In personal finance, those spending the fewest dollars out of total dollars earned are usually winners!
  • Honesty and integrity are part of the game.   Honesty and integrity are essential when managing your finances.
  • You can have fun with your playing partners- even when not playing your best.  Those who enjoy people  can be happy without wealth but are better at building wealth.
  • Enjoy the journey and the challenge of your next shot.  Make your money management the same by enjoying the  process.
  • It’s not the tools.  A great golfer doesn’t need  expensive equipment. If you understand money, you don’t need a super-computer and complex investments to make a buck!
  • Great golfers make it look easy but have put in  years of practice and sacrifice.  Making your money behave takes work, study, and self control too.
  • With the  handicapping system an amateur can compete with a great golfer and have a chance to win. In America, beginning your own business and competing with established businesses remains an option for even the most limited of family finances.  A great idea and sweat equity remain a winning formula.
  • Golfers have to choose the right tool-you don’t use a sand wedge on a green.  Managing your money requires you to pick the right tool to match your goal.  You don’t put the grocery money in a risky investment.
  • You can fail many times in both before you succeed.  McIlroy, who won the US Open failed miserably in his last major tournament-blowing up in the last round.  He shook it off to win.  Shake off your money mistakes and move on.

Golf and Money

I don’t know if the President and the Speaker solved all of our countries money problems by winning two bucks from the Governor and the VP.  I am sure they came away with a better understanding of each other.

Our country needs sober minded people making difficult choices right now and if it takes a few rounds of golf to allow them to work together, that is money well spent.

Enjoy the journey

And remember as important as managing your money properly is, enjoying the journey along the way is MORE important.

I loved the analogy between golf and money, especially your point that the one who spends the least win. As you said, the key to managing money is being patient and enjoying the journey. If you don’t enjoy the journey, you are more likely to give up and revert back to old extravagant habits easily.

Are you a doctor or a nurse? Managing money and playing golf seem so far apart. Have you struck deals only over golf? I’m not so sure my being horrible at golf could improve my business. How good do you have to be?

    • Dr.Dean says:

John, I’m a doctor writing a blog about helping nurses with their finances. I am also married to a nurse. I don’t play golf, though I have loved it in the past.

I’ve never struck a deal on the golf course, being a gynecologist, there really are few opportunities to really do much business on the golf course:)

The point of my post was that a few of the traits that make up a good golfer can be transferable to better money management.
