Financial Follies
The Friday Financial Follies (FFF) are designed to summarize the important financial issues of the week.
- Share the humor of the FFF that are funny.
- Make fun of the stupid.
- Highlight those FFF you need to be aware of if you want to be financially well-grounded or is it well-rounded???
Earthquake hits Virginia and New York threatened with a hurricane. No not Key West, but NYC…maybe the end of the world guy was just a little off with his math. I loved the pic on Twitter showing earthquake damage….I’m afraid the hurricane pics won’t be quite so funny.
But the real earthquake was where earthquakes usually occur: in California with Steve Jobs resignation.
The stock market was hit by a storm in the last few weeks, with the Dow rising and falling as if the Wicked Witch of the West is riding Irene.
I hope all you guys and your families are safe, sound, dry, and haven’t lost your internet connection.
This weeks financial news of interest started off slow, with the President on vacation (some would say that’s a good thing) but as the storm brewed so did the world of financial news.
Let’s get started:
iPad uses:
Jeff Bullas says 69% of iPad owners use it in the bedroom. “How do you get it to vibrate?” my wife asks. (if you tell her I wrote that I will never speak to you again!)
How ’bout this commute:
The next time you’re complaining about your taxi driver, remember this: A ferry in Finland ran aground when the captain was stuck in the toilet. Does this qualify as toilet humor? His day sure took a turn in the crapper!
Monopoly-Greek style:
In the US we worry about Microsoft’s monopoly, or maybe Google. In Greece, the law has cracked down on a Doughnut seller who was strong-arming his competition. Does this have anything to do with Greece’s financial difficulty? Probably not, but they do have their priorities….
Slap Shot
Kid (age 11) makes a $50,000 hockey slap shot-too bad his twin was the one who was actually supposed to have the stick….Should he get the money? What’s your take?
Dogs do math?
Len @ LenPenzo.com needs a calculator…This guy just uses his pup for his math… Len can your dog add and subtract?
Can I borrow a nickle for the meter?
What if you owned the world’s largest yacht, but couldn’t get a parking place? Poor baby…I would probably just buy the damn dock if I had that much money!
Laughter:
Comedy Clubs that made it through the downturn, are having the last laugh, so says Smart Money! Maybe I’ll drop in and audition…Profit margin of a comedy club-15%. That’s a lotta work for that margin, though medicine’s not that much better, as I think about it…
Ok, my last iPad reference:
Speaking of iPads….United Airlines is saving millions on fuel with pilots using iPads instead of paper in the cockpit? The way airlines charge, it’ll show up as an iPad surcharge instead of an iPad discount….
Personal Finance Reads:
Enough of that blather, on to the important news and views of my personal finance buds:
Thanks to Len at LenPenzo.com for asking me to host Black Coffee, his long running Saturday breath of fresh air….At least till I got involved.
Barbara Friedberg discusses rich people tips and traits. Mirroring actions of successful folks is not a bad way to develop good money habits.
Amanda at Frugal Confessions is paying cash, or is she…. on big ticket items-and saving money, you go girl.
Punch Debt has a little accidental intelligence. I think that’s the same as rather be lucky than good...
Everyday Tips and Thoughts has a long cellphone saga, least it has a happy ending. Reminds me of “Hello, this Peggy, can I help????”
Crystal at BITFS sold her locks for 100 bucks, red is the new green.
And before you go try to sleep on your uncomfortable mattress, check out Kay Lynn’s new blog look and write a story to win a Tempur Pedic mattress. It’s what this Doc sleeps on. (unsolicited testimony!)
Thanks for reading, and thanks to Penzo. He has agreed to write next weeks Financial Follies while I head to my Southern Command Post in Costa Rica for a working vacation. Click here for a picture of The Millionaire Nurse South office view. I’ll try not to suffer too much!
Speakin of Google + I’m there as Dean Burke. Put me in one of your circles, I’ll feel so special….
Make sure you follow me on Twitter @DrDeanBurke- quick links on the side of the blog! And let’s not miss a post-sign up for email special delivery or the RSS feed!

Thanks for mentioning the contest. I’m glad to find another happy Tempur-Pedic owner!
