Best In Nurse Blogs: Dr.Dean is Out of Town Edition

Guest Post: The Nerdy Nurse

When Dr.Dean asked me if I’d like to help out with the Best in Nurse Blogs while he was out of the Country, I was tickled pink. Although, admittedly, I was also a little nervous. I mean, a nurse filling in for a doctor? There’s probably a law about that or something somewhere.

And what big shoes to fill!

Dr.Dean brings us a bi-weekly update on the nursing blogosphere and enlightens us to digital media content that might have slipped by.

Guess I’ll just have to do my best. So here goes nothing!

Best in Nurse Blogs:

Toronto Emerg’s always got something interesting going on in her neck of the woods. This week is not an exception when they question “O Why O Why Did I Pick Up The Phone?”

A beautiful post relating to poetry and perspective in nursing from AJN’s Off the Charts. It brings a new meaning to the term “The Art of Nursing” and compassion certainly plays a key role.

JParadisi RN writes about Pain. Misconceptions about narcotics and fear can cause undo suffering. When a child can’t speak for themselves,  a good nurse advocates for proper pain management for their patient and educates everyone involved.

If you’re looking for a reason to get your ovaries a’quiverin’ then Running Wildly has written a beautiful piece about her little girl. And even though pregnancy was the most miserable experience of my entire life, I even felt my ovaries tingle a little when she speaks about her daughters 2nd birthday.

Emergiblog writes a letter to her senior nursing student daughter. A double dose of care goes into this post! How proud she must be that her daughter is following in her footsteps! The letter is pertinent for any nursing student on the edge of graduation. The fear and anticipation of being a nurse during that last semester of school are an experience not easy to describe. Her advice and love expressed in her letter for her nursing student daughter are amazing and definitively worth a read.

The image of nursing is attacked yet again, and My Strong Medicine speaks out about the topic. This time our image isn’t just made into something that is vulgar, it’s downright horrific. Be warned. The image is somewhat disturbing.

Makings of a Nurse discusses finishing up her final summer semester of school and putting out fires in her profession. Healthcare can be an inferno!

DIY Tattoos! Yep! You can learn anything on the internet…. or in prison. If you’re not sure if that boyfriend of yours has done any time in the slammer, Correctional Nurse’s video will help you identify prison tats!

If you’re into podcasts, then The Nursing Show has part 3 about Katrina Hospital Preparedness lawsuit. Could it set a precedence for impossible standards in hospital preparedness? Just how much a disaster should a facility be ready for. And if they fall short, should they sued? Greater insight to be had in the podcast.

She did it! After moving from night to day shift. Not Nurse Ratched decided the move back over to the dark-side, and pay with the noc nurses again. She has quite a tale about a water heater, that isn’t hot, and the differences between working days and nights in the ER.

Nursetopia, who is always a great source for heartfelt and interesting nurse blogger reading, is not a let down this week either. She writes about how one error in health care can be deadly for many. Checks and balances in health care exist for a reason, and her article about one error and it’s devastating effects on 5 patients is a shining example of that.

Forgive me if I toot my own horn a little, but I have an somewhat of an Open Letter to Walmart with a request for them to stock Integrity and Clinical Judgment. The Nerdy Nurse also has some ramblings about Anti-Cancer Viruses causing the Zombie Apocalypse … if you’re into that sort of thing.

You should probably give Dr. Dean Burke some social media love and follow him on twitter, or perhaps you want to be his friend on Facebook?  But if you’re a super cool social media aficionado, then Google plus is where it’s at, and sho’nuff Dr. Dean is there!

    • Dr.Dean says:

Thanks for all your help. Loved it! And as to your suggestion, I’ll put it under consideration……

      • In that case, pencil me in for a week in 2016. I doubt I’ll be confident to travel abroad with my kid before then!
It’s a challenge to go to the grocery store with a 2 year old, I can’t imagine what it would be like on a plan and out of country!
