Friday Financial Follies

This week the world is discussing gas prices.  Everyone gets a pay cut when the price of gas rises.  It’s hell on those that try to plan their expenses.  The airlines, delivery folks, and many other businesses can add a “fuel surcharge” to your bill.

Maybe we should try handing one to our employers.  Or the kids, “Honey before you get out, drop your fuel surcharge money into the cup and have a great day!”

Yeah right!

Nope, we are the ultimate end user and have no option but to conserve our use.

Don’t let high gas prices make you stupid.  Like buying a Prius and financing it for 7 years.  I will be writing an article with numbers on how difficult it is to financially justify a new vehicle,  just because of high gas prices, especially on credit.  You can’t wait to read it, right….

An SUV driver jumping the que got way more than she bargained for.  I hope her insurance is paid up…If you like explosions check this one out.

It’s Still a Pink Tutu

So this guy begins taking pics of himself in his pink tutu as a way to cope with his wife’s cancer diagnosis.  He kept taking the pictures (still in his tutu) in a variety of settings from rural pastures (with cows?) to the Staten Island Ferry.  Even though the money goes to a great cause, it’s still a pink tutu….Hmmm,  wonder how I would look in a lace peignoir.

Beer

It’s not breaking news, it’s not even news.  Beer has made this a better world and you should know that. Watch a very clever review of the ways the humble beverage has carved a niche in our lives and culture.  Hat’s off to beer.  Cheers J Money, my brother in brewskies…

Marmageddon

The earthquake that hit Christchurch last year has led to a shortage of a New Zealand favorite:   ‘marmite.  Stashes of the little jars (even some partially used jars) are being auctioned at exorbitant prices.  Sadly, bare store  shelves are not to be resupplied until July at the earliest.

Maybe Not Yet

But who knows, the next big hot ‘e’ thing may your cellphone ringing through magnetic tattoos.  Yep, right there on your arm, or, anywhere….  Thinking of all the  possible locations.  I’m imagining being in the OR when the tattoo rings…..uh, hello…

Next time you’re down the street rummaging through someone’s discards, looking for a treasure, careful of the pipe bombs.  Yes, it has happened.

This poor little bat, a new discovery in Vietnam, has the ugliest schnozzle ever.  I mean really.  Poor little guy.

Kindle

I’m pretty new to e readers and I love my kindle but the e-reader idea is not new.  This is an illustration of the electronic reader idea circa 1935.  An idea before its time.  I’m sticking with my kindle.

Ah…AAh…CHOO!

Yes, with early  Spring comes that wretched allergy  season and then almost 1 in 7 people every year develop sinus infections.  The infectious disease folks have released new guidelines for treating these annoying nasal infections that are almost always caused by viruses.   Antibiotics are no longer recommended  since they  do nothing to help-except cause drug resistance problems.  Sneezers,  beware.

Biotech Patent Ruling

In a ruling that affects personalized medicine, the booming practice of tailoring diagnostic tests to an individual, the Supreme Court ruled that merely saying a test is new is not patentable.  Companies must do more to prove the ‘newness’ before being granted a patent.

The 3 Cent Cancer Drug

Yes, 3 cents.  In new research, the ubiquitous pain killer, aspirin, was proven to reduce the chances of developing and dying from cancer.  The ancient drug also inhibits the spread of tumors.
