Financial Follies: Moving Family Edition!

The Friday Financial and Health Follies (FFHF) summarize the important (or just fun) financial and health issues of the week.

  • Share the humor of the funny
  • Make fun of the stupid.
  • Highlight and explain new financial and health news-so you don’t miss it!

Friday Financial Follies

I’m headed north this weekend to help my daughter move.  Every time I say, “This is the last time,” I always eat my words.  So why do I bother with those wasted words of wishful thinking???

Moving, Moving, Moving, gotta keep Movin'....

I’m not sure, but I’ll do my best this time to just “enjoy” being in the moment with my family.  (even if it is trudging up stairs with a couch and washing machine….)

Family is after all family…

Let’s get started with:

This weeks financial and health foibles, follies and falderal:

Financial and Health News:

Justice department sues Apple and book publishers for monopoly price fixing on eBooks.  This suit will end up saving us money on  eBooks, but may end up causing publishers to fail.

Maid Service: New Niche

Waitress struggling to make ends meet in Lubbuck, Texas creates Fantasy Maids, a new niche in the maid service industry: nude maids.  Concerned this is a cover for the oldest profession, law enforcers are watching the business carefully. Public officials and law officers receive a discount.

North Pole Marathon

How many of you have run a marathon?  How many of you have run a marathon at minus 20 F?  How many of you ran a -20F marathon and accepted a proposal of marriage at the finish line?

Lose Weight with a New Habitat

All you need to do is get a new roomier crib and it’ll happen, you drop weight. Elephants at a zoo in Hawaii dropped a mere 300#s each.  Cool.  That could be you.

Yuck

Man bringing joy to the neighborhood, selling ice cream from his truck.  No problem.  It was the drugs he was selling from his underwear that got him arrested.

 Early Season Baseball Humor

This job posting made it to Twitter before is was removed from Craigslist:

RELIEF PITCHERS WANTED:   CHICAGO CUBS (Wrigley Field).

Bears and Texting Don’t Mix

Guy walking down the street (In LA???) texting, encounters a bear.   Texting does increase the rate of accidents. In this case accidentally walking into a Bear’s personal space….

Hocus Pocus?  Not Hypnosis

Hypnosis is becoming more mainstream in treating anxiety and other medical problems.  And no walking around acting like a chicken….

Facebooking Felonious Fool

The cops are getting pretty close to nabbing a fellow who updates his Facebook page after every cop evasion.  He’s convicted of 5 felonies, one is for assault on his girlfriend.  She may be an ex as he changed his Facebook status to ‘available’.

Medical News

Even if you apply sunscreen, etc, it may not be enough

Drug Shortages, In The USA

Bad enough to be admitted into the hospital, but then they run out of medicines to treat you.  Third world country? Nope, right here in the US.  (I get an email almost weekly from our hospital pharmacy about drug shortages.)

Personal Finance and other good reads:

The Worst of the Free Financial Advisor Podcast Episode #4...iTunes Subscribe Here (yes I’m a panelist, no, I don’t know why…)

Eating less salt is the subject at Prairie Eco-Thrifter.

One Cent At A Time has a guest post on what to ask your doctor before surgery.  Most are actually good advice. I added one in the comments…

My Broken Coin discusses shopping in pawn shops.  I think they are fun, but I see her point about them being a little depressing.  To me though no worse than standing in line to pay for gas while three people are scratching off their scratch offs at the counter….I guess if they win they can buy a malted beverage….

  1. krantcents says:

Thanks for the links, I really appreciate it.

  2. Have fun with your family – strangely enough I had very similar thoughts today (that I should be more present with my family). As to the North Pole marathon, I want to do this; not sure about a proposal but otherwise sound like fun (John is threatening divorce though).

  3. Nosirree, I don’t understand the running marathon mentality, much less in the North Pole! That’s just snow on ice, people, no land! But I guess a marriage proposal was a happy award for finishing.

  4. 101 Centavos says:

Drug shortages… that’s almost too hard to believe that a free marketplace can’t get a product to willing buyers. Ah, but I forget myself, it’s not a free marketplace.

    • Dr.Dean says:

Great call 101. The feds limitations on medicare drug spending has limited the margins on many drugs making very little margin for drug makers, therefore the incentive for production is limited.

  5. I had a big move last year, and hopefully it will be the last for a while! Thanks for the inclusion :)

  6. AverageJoe says:

Thanks for mentioning the show again, Dr. Dean! Of course we know why you’re a panelist…because if you weren’t there’d be no good, calm advice on the show.
