Occupy Wall Street

The OWS movement has spread. Cities around the globe have headlines and news feeds detailing the tent encampments and throngs of people protesting-something. It seems big-business and greedy bankers (the one-percenters) the financial ‘haves’ as opposed to us ‘have-nots’ are the targets.

Plenty of Room For Occupiers

This is my response:

Please Come Occupy in my Town

I live in a rural community whose version of ‘boom times’ meant

Houses on the real estate market actually sold in less than a couple of years.

Manufacturing jobs were available-if you got your GED or a technical degree.

Unemployment dropped to the state average.

Tax revenues increased.

People planted annuals by their mailbox.

This prolonged recession has meant:

Houses go on the market and stay there-many houses are silently for sale but folks have given up and taken the signs down.

Manufacturing jobs are gone.

Local unemployment is way above the national and state average

Tax revenues and therefore municipal coffers are empty.

Thank God for perennials-drought resistant….

Please Occupy

That would mean we must have had a few:

Greedy, successful businesses here.

Fat-cat bankers buying luxury autos from our few remaining car dealers.

Wealthy one percenters hanging out, eating at our restaurants, supporting the dry cleaners, buying stuff and generally taking advantage of all us regular folks.

As it is, no one around here wants to Occupy, or even protest. Maybe if you Occupy folks came, you would buy some gas, spend a little on food, and attract a little media attention. I know Matt Lauer or Brett Baier would want to stay in one of our empty hotel rooms.

That might increase our sales tax income…..whoo-hoo!

Better yet, all you one percenters who don’t feel welcome in your big cities any more,

Come on down!

You’re welcome to come here and spend your money. We won’t be jealous. We’ll roll out the red carpet.

Nope-no one here is worrying about Occupying anything.

We are busy doing what it takes to take care of our family. No whining, no blaming, just working our rear end off. We are enjoying a 5 minute drive to work. No lines to buy a sandwich. And no 8 buck Latte’s.

And glad to live in this free country.

As that great American, Forest Gump, says: “That’s all I have to say about that!”

FDL, BSN is a public health nurse, and a frequent guest poster.

Nurse Blog Best

We Go Live, this week….. I’ve been hearing that term (go live) so much over the past coupla months, that I’ve gotten used to it. Anyone else hearing it is thinking, go live, what the hell does that mean?

We “go live” with our new athenahealth Electronic Medical Record. The secret will be to get the advantages of less paper, no lost charts, reminders at the click of a button, and online Rx orders.

At the same time we aren’t soooo busy looking at the monitor and keyboard, we forget we’re dealing with patients. Patients with real LIVE problems who don’t want to be there in the first place, but do want someone to listen to their concerns..

We need to make eye contact. Actively listen and make sure our patients feel we really are paying attention. All the while we are documenting positives, negatives, allergies, reactions, family, past and social histories. And come up with an appropriate diagnosis, treatment plan, and finally get paid.

No problem mon! Piece of cake.

Best in Nurse Blogs:

Toronto Emerg is back with her creative juices bursting with this post: “Triage”. I love it. Allows your imagination to fill in the blanks….

Higher education and certification in nursing results in higher pay, so says Nursetopia. I love it when academic articles confirm my seat of the pants opinions….( I forget the one’s that don’t….)

Who says all nurse blogs cover is high tech, nerdy things….Here is a review by Nerdy Nurse of a new tape by 3-M for patient care uses. I don’t really like the name, “Kind Removal Silicone Tape” I understand they are trying to imitate “ouchless” bandaids but this name sounds more like it was thought up by British engineers… Can’t you see one sitting at his workbench with his big walrus mustache saying “This new tape is “kind” to your skin on removal ole chap…”

How bout “Easy Tape” Easy to apply, easy to remove. The first commercial could be shot at the old Charity Hospital in “The Big Easy” You guys at 3-M call me and I’ll sell you the name and concept, no prob!

Now to get back to why we are here

More Nurse Blog Best:

Keith at Digital Doorway reviews a book about a new nurse in oncology. The kicker is the new nurse is a former English professor and writer, Theresa Brown. Interesting. Keith gave it a thumbs up.

Crass-Pollination caught a patient in a lie.

Nurse Ratched fantasizes about a treadmill at the workplace. Interesting concept, and no it’s not for exercising.

jParadisiRN muses about chickens, and space. Living “space” not the space shuttle is never going into space again space. Just go read it.

AJN highlights the patients with cell phone issue. Even my 85 + patients purses are now vibrating or ring a linging….I just comply when they boldly ask me to hand them their purse during the middle of an exam.

Too much social media. So says Not Nurse Ratched. So far I’m kinda liking Google+, but haven’t had much time to be social anywhere lately. It’s all I can do to post here on the blog enough to keep people checkin in.

Thanks!

I want to thank my staff for their hard work getting ready for our Go LIVE date and being willing to learn new things, with mostly a good attitude. It’s probably best we decided to do this EMR thing during the worst economy of the last 75 years, so my employees are less tempted to jump ship….

There have been many times I wanted to go with ‘em!

Wish us luck!

Cutting Spending vs Raising Revenue

“Spending cuts” is the new buzz term for the feds efforts to lower spending. “Raising revenue” is now substituted for the evil phrase “raising taxes.”

Your household is also limited by this delicate balance between spending and income (revenue.)

Your revenue is limited to your money producing efforts ( yea we call it a job).

Unlike the government, we are stuck with the traditional ways to balance our household budget, by working a second job, eliminating spending, or otherwise making sacrifices….Or are we???

New Household Management

What if we envisioned a new household run with the taxing powers of the federal government, combined with the revenue raising power of the airlines….

(Envision copious quantities of pixie dust, and harp music!)

Then think about this conversation:

“Son, thanks for cleaning your room and taking the garbage out this week-here is your allowance.”

“Mom, what’s this. My allowance is 10 bucks a week-and you only gave me $8.50!”

“Your Dad and I went out to eat Saturday and spent more than we meant to. So we are going to begin keeping 15% of your allowance-at least until we pay off the credit card.”

“And when you sell lemonade this weekend, 25% of the profits will come to us for allowing you to use that space by the curb for your new

New Household Cleaning Rules!

business.”

“Don’t mind the meters on the toilet and shower-they will help us with the new water use fee of 5 bucks a week for the first 5 gallons, and 25 cents a gallon thereafter….”

“I’ve also instituted a 10 dollars a month laundry fee. Partially reimbursable if you fill out this form and also do your own sheets and towels…”

“But Mommmmm, that’s not fair!”

Don’t “not fair” me, you ungrateful spawn of mine!” If you have something to say, file a brief with the Family Supreme Court!”

“And to help with increased fuel costs, I’ve instituted a new fuel surcharge. For every mile over 20/miles per week of hauling your skinny ass you and your sister around, it’ll cost ya .20/mile.”

“And if you continue to want full meals every evening, you will have to pay a new “First Class” surcharge of 30 bucks a month, otherwise you’ll only get a PB&J, and a small bag of mixed nuts.”

“Tap water with your meal is free, all other choices of milk, tea, or soda are a dollar each. And you’ll need a credit or debit card to swipe before I will bring it to the table.

“And don’t worry about those guys in uniforms with a permanent scowl. They’re the new HSA agents (Household Security Agency). They’ll check to make sure you’ve done your homework, and X-ray the mattress for Penthouse any banned materials.

And they’ll also be monitoring your browsing on the net (broadband is 20 cents a minute btw) so be careful.”

“They do have arrest powers!”

Reader comments:

What’s your vision of your household if it were run by the feds or airline execs? What’ve I left out?

{photo credit: Elizabeth/Table4Five c.c.}

Cancer

As a parent the words cancer when used to describe one of your kids would be devastating. Unfortunately 70,000 people will hear that diagnosis this year.

Nursetopia (a nurse blogger) has encouraged all us Word-press folks to display this badge above today.

It is about bringing awareness to adolescent and young adult cancer.

This week is National Young Adult Cancer Week. It is a week of focus on the 70,000 cases of cancer diagnosed each year in the 15-39 age group.

There is an effort to bring attention to this huge under-appreciated problem and this blog post is a part of it.

The thought is to break cancer by setting a record…. The record is the number of Word-press blogs to join the fight and show the logo.

I didn’t know they kept blogging widgets world records-but it’s for a good cause so count me in….

Please leave your comments to help support this world record attempt.

I’m honoring my brother and my sister in law who are cancer survivors and my many patients who have bravely fought the disease!

So leave your comments below we are counting them and counting on you!

The Yakezie Carnival

The first signs of spring are showing up here in the south. The dogwoods are starting to bloom, my grass is greening up, and the Master’s commercials are all over ESPN and CBS….

In this Spring Training version of the Yakezie (Best Blogs in Personal Finance) Carnival, I wanted to highlight my team, the Atlanta Braves! (sorry Sam and Len!)

I will mix Braves facts and trivia amongst the great writings submitted to this weeks Yakezie Carnival!

I began listening to Braves games on the radio as a kid. My dad was a fan from when the Braves first moved to Atlanta in 1966. My earliest recollection of a game in person, Henry Aaron was in the outfield, and Joe Torre was the Braves catcher.

I was able to go to the Braves clubhouse during the last game at the about to be demolished Atlanta/Fulton County stadium-the year before they moved into the current Turner Field. While I was in the men’s room-Greg Maddox, (known as Mad-Dog) threw a fastball through the wall, cause he could….

The Yakezie Carnival

Holiday Deals on The Unusual

GUEST POST BY FDL:

It’s here again. Looming on the horizon, or actually maybe a little over it, that giant orb of gift-giving-Christmas!

I honestly love it!

What I need, however, is a magic list of the ‘just the right thing’ to buy for people I care a lot about.

As a tightwad of legendary proportions within my little circle, it’s not like I am planning to spend a small fortune. No I’m not going to blow my budget, get teased into using a store credit card, overpay for shiney things…..

No, for cheapos like me, I simply want something special to give to my special people-but at a special price. That’s where the hard part of all this comes in.

Just the Right Gift-At The Right Price

Your Idea Here! (by mysza831)

That is also where the web comes in. Isn’t it great the way, you have a terrific idea for the just the right item for your Mom, you can usually find it online? Coming up with the idea is the hard part.

Once, we drew names at work. The person whose name I drew, I knew, collected this particular little small glass item made by a specialty company.

Ebay to the rescue. So cool.

I won the E-bay auction and got something my co-worker really wanted that I would never have been able to find for such a good price locally. She was overwhelmed.

The giver (myself) still has a warm glow over the tiny bit of effort involved in that gift to someone who really appreciated it… People with hobbies can make it easy to buy for.

Great sites to take a look for unusual gifts

But for those that don’t:

eCrater They are not charging fees, which can only mean cheaper prices.

Bonanza Their fees appear to be low and that can only mean savings for us. It is an attractive home page with a revolving ‘window’ that will probably give the curious shopper some ideas for that hard to by for non-hobby person on your list.

ebay Always a place to look for the unusual. Sure they are top heavy with large merchants who are passing on the higher fees ebay has hit them with to us-but for now, you might leave them on your online marketplace list. For now.

Amazon-good grief. They are really the giant competition for all these other sites. They do have their limits though-when you narrow your area down. You might have to think really hard-just sayin…..

everyplaceisell.com is a directory of shopping sources, that can help you find unusual gifts.

And Gifts for Nurses:

Nurses Station A site filled with nursing related gifts, and specialty items.

Zazzle for Nurses-Don’t get too dazzled by all that zazzle!

Good luck finding that special gift for that special person at that special price!

By FDL

Dr Dean: FDL is an occasional guest poster who writes about clutter, and other stuff at The Fast DeClutter Blog!

Reader Questions:

Do you have a favorite place for that online shopping for unusual gifts?

Maybe a place to shop for fellow nurses or medical stuff, share it with my readers!

A Frightening List Of Reads From Nurse Blogs

Every couple of weeks I try to review what is being written in the nurse blog kingdom. So this is the Halloween version-and I know Halloween is not till next weekend, but since I only do this every two weeks, then …. You get the drift…

I want to start this version of the Best in Nurse Blogs with a series of posts by Head Nurse. Head Nurse is a long-time nurse blogger who has been bravely writing about her own personal fight with cancer over the past month or so. You have to go back and read all of her posts over the past few weeks to get the full sense of her journey-so I just linked to her blog, not a single post!

She does it with humor, dignity, and fearlessness that her family should be proud of. I noticed she has a Paypal donate button, similar to a lot of bloggers with their “buy me a beer” button. She has already written that she doesn’t want financial help, but that button is there, -I’m just sayin.. I know how expensive cancer care is, regardless of your finances-so help a nurse, nurse blogger, and human being!

At AJN, a tale about taking care of an organ donor is worth your time, for several reasons-Does your drivers license say you are an organ donor? Why not?

Keith at Digital Doorway has an interesting infographic on the nursing shortage. Pop over and take a look. Don’t forget to come back!

Nurse Joy has a few Ramblins….

Infusion Nurse has ten tips for those on infusion therapy. Please share with those in need.

Phil at Health is Social has written about technology, mass media and communication in health care.

Sean, at Male Nurse, writes an intro to being a male nurse: Male Nurse 101! And Sean, at his own blog-My Strong Medicine, writes about being a sin against nature!

Toronto Emerg serves one up about Bea’s Boobs-who can resist a headline like that?

Not Nurse Ratched has advice for Apple about the I-Pad and MacBook Air-Steve are you listening???

Nurse Story has Web 2.0 tips for nurses. We all need help getting the message out.

Self Portrait...(kidding) photo by JGlucker

So that ends the Halloween Edition of the Best in Nurse Blogs-Have a great week, and may your treats, out weigh your tricks!

PS For Nurse Bloggers

And if you are a nurse blogger, and are not on my Nurse Blogs blogroll, please let me know in the comments, and I will add you. If you have done so in the past, and you are still not there, I apologize. Just let me have it!!! You know Docs…..

And The Millionaire Nurse Blog was mentioned in a top 50 list of nursing student online resources! Thanks!

Bonds and Bubbles

Bonds have been in the news lately. The concern by the Wall Street talking heads, is that the bond market is in a bubble. What is a bubble?

No it’s not a bubble, like we used to blow with our little bottles of soap and the rings that came with it.

And no, it’s not a bubble, like we blow with our baseball card bubble gum, or the big red ball of gum, that keep the dentist in BMW’s.

And no, its not the bubbles, that tickles our nose when we are drinking cheap champagne on New Year’s Eve.

Bubble Monster by audi_inspiration(C.C.)

This kind of bubble, is the kind that bursts when we invest our hard-earned dollar, or even worse, our borrowed dollar on the stock or bond market. Following the herd, the can’t miss recommendation of our brother-in-law.

Then POP, the bubble bursts, along with our dreams of making a killing!

Again-the bubble bursting is the noise we hear, when our investment crashes to the floor, or worse, the basement, or even worse to floors of hell!

Now that you understand bubbles, now lets discuss the bond’s that may or may not be floating, up, up, up-waiting on the guy with the needle, with a grin on his face, waiting for just the right moment-to bring it all crashing down.

Types of Bonds

I recently wrote, a very serious article, about how a company sells bonds to raise money to build a new factory.

Bonds, however, come in several types, with the post I linked to above discussing corporate bonds.

US Government Bonds

But the most common bonds sold, are US government bonds. These are sold at auction by the US government, to raise (borrow) money to pay for its bills. Otherwise known as the US debt. And as we have discussed in earlier posts, the US debt is growing at a record rapid pace.

Where does the bubble come in with bonds? Well, with all the turmoil recently with concerns about a double dip recession, and another world economic downturn-the professional investors are piling into the guaranteed return of the US government bonds.

Another reason, is the fear of the stock market-money has to be invested somewhere, and if not stocks, that leaves bonds for many investors.

The more investors bidding for the bonds, the lower the interest rate. The interest rate on US Bonds are at 30 plus year lows.

Why you, a nurse should care about Bonds:

But the bigger question you may have is, “Why should I, a nurse working a 12 hour shift care?” I am just working to feed the family, and helping others.

The reason you should care, is that the interest rate paid on these bonds, is reflected in, or has an impact on, just about every other part of the economy, and your money.

It affects:

mortgage rates

the success of your 401k or 403b, if any of your money is invested in bonds-and most of you have a portion of your money in bonds-whether you know it or not-if you invest in one of those retirement accounts at work.

the rates you pay, when you borrow money for a car, truck, boat, etc.

the rates you get paid in your savings or interest bearing checking account.

So the government bond interest rate yield has an affect on all of us. And bubbles are usually not a good thing, in any part of the financial world, because they are followed by a lot of pain, when the bubble bursts.

I will discuss and explain government bond investing further in another post. Whether you should buy bonds, or bond mutual funds, in your retirement accounts, 401-k or in your own investment accounts.

Reader Questions

What do you think? Are we in a bond bubble, does the interest rate you are paying or are being paid, matter to you right now?

What are your questions about the bond market, and all this government debt?
