Best In Nurse Blogs: Habit Changing Edition!

Sunday, August 12th, 2012

The latest edition of the Best In Nurse Blogs-my bi-weekly focus on the best writing by, for, or about Nurses!

by Dean

Changing Behaviors

Self-destructive behaviors are the most challenging problem healthcare practitioners face on a daily basis.

Smoking, over-eating, alcohol abuse, and many self-induced stress causing behaviors….If I could effect change sustainably in those areas?  Cool stuff to think about! The improvements my patients would see in their health…it would be like winning the lottery.

Habit: A Recurring Behavior

Patients want to change their self-harming behavior. They know they need to.

But it’s damn hard.

I’m reviewing some of the work by Dr BJ Fogg, a Stanford researcher, on behavior/habit change. He has a free program called Tiny Habits that encourages users to make microscopic behavior changes for a couple of weeks to show the power of baby steps in the changing of behavior.

The 3 habits I want to change are  rolling about in my mind.  I’ve got a week to formalize them for the program.

If this works, I’ll try to incorporate these steps into my practice and see what happens.  I’ll keep you posted.

Let’s get started with this version of:

The Best Nursing Blogs

Kevin at Innovative Nurse dissects AT&T’s new data plan.  Having just been slammed by Verizon for going over our minutes, I will be reviewing this carefully.

Barbara at NPBusiness has a great video on being proactive with your planning and practice.  She is discussing the possibility of the effects of an undesirable neighbor at your practice site and its potential impact on your business.  Good stuff.

At Correctional Nurse, Lorry interviews a nurse researcher, Dr Anita Hufft,  who is studying the effects of inmate manipulation on health care providers in the correctional system.  From my own practice I know how difficult these manipulators are to deal with.  They know all the tricks and angles to try to get what they want…This would apply to any clinical setting by the way. Manipulative people are not all in the correctional system, as all ER nurses are well aware!

A cartoon that will make you LOL is at Nurse Kitty’s.

The Nursing Show Podcast reviews antihypertensives.  That category of drug changes faster than I grow gray hairs, so check it out.

Nurse Teeny at the Makings of a Nurse is reviewing a book: Life Support by Suzanne Gordon.  Looks interesting.

Joni at Nursetopia gave away an orchid and made someone’s day.  I love orchids.  When I retire (in about a hundred years, give or take) and have a greenhouse, I could see myself being an orchid grower.

How not to treat patients in a medical office visit is the substance of Terri’s post at Nurse Story’s adventure in ophthalmology land….I mentally reviewed several of her issues as I was reading thinking of my office.  Wearing name tags: check, introduce yourself: check, and washing hands: check.  Practitioners should apologize if they are running late, and better yet have staff warn patients, upfront, if the schedule is backed-up.

Jessica at Nurses Network summarizes the current status of Obamacare (PPACA).

Fitbit, a fancy pedometer with accompanying weight loss app, is reviewed at Not Nurse Ratched.  I’ve always wondered how many steps between exam rooms I take in a day. This would allow me to find out.  Hmmm, 100 bucks…I’ll have to think on it…How badly do I want to know?

Another job lost because of  insensitive/inappropriate social media comments is discussed at Nerdy Nurse.  Such an avoidable problem.  We all need to “think” before we hit “publish!”

jParadisiRN discusses the “cheap, fast, or good?” as it relates to healthcare and airlines.   I wish we could have all three, then healthcare reform would be easy….

Donna at Nurses Power beautifully describes the diversity of career choices available to nurses. Finding your passion/niche is a great way to avoid burnout.  Be creative.  Not getting into debt allows you the freedom to try things out without the stress of making that car payment or paying for that new toy.  Freedom is worth a little sacrifice regarding the possession of more material things, IMHO….

Check ‘Em Out!

Check out these great nurse blogs and writers.  If you have a blog favorite or a self-nomination of your own blog, let me know in the comments or shoot me an email.  We love to find new places to share with our audience!

Have a great week!

Best In Nurse Blogs: Free Compliments Edition!

Sunday, February 26th, 2012

The latest edition of the Best In Nurse Blogs-my bi-weekly focus on the best writing by, for, or about Nurses!

Best In Nurse Blogs:

A new feature at The Millionaire Nurse Blog will be a series featuring interviews with nurses with interesting backgrounds, hobbies, jobs or life outlook.  FDL, a frequent guest poster and public health nurse will be starting that series soon.  She is a former military truck driver (she handled the big fuel hauling semis), and has some pretty different stuff in her own bio.  Nurses are interesting people-let her share your story.

My plan is to alternate it with the Best In Nurse Blog series that continues to be popular based on the number of tweets and page views it receives.

Consider this a casting call. Don’t be bashful.  Let me know if you’re interested, or you know someone whose story should be told.  I will forward your info to FDL.  Just send me a note here: dean at the millionaire nurse dot com  Remember…no spaces and don’t forget the @ and the . (dot)….

Now, on to:

The Best In Nursing Blogs

AJN proclaims Lieutenant General Patricia Horoho  to become the first nurse and first women to become the head of the US Army Medical Command.  This is the top job in military health care. Congratulations and best wishes as this is a very important position to provide the best care to those active duty personnel serving their country!

J.ParadisiRN explains how hospitals are different from restaurants….But it’s not about food.

The Nerdy Nurse shares a reveiw of headphones that don’t go in your ears. They work by transferring sound through the bones around your ears.  Interesting stuff. It sounds as if they would interfere with my selective hearing loss?…hmmm.

At Your Cervix discusses her views on the subjectivity of pain perception-especially in the context of labor and delivery.

Living up to his moniker, Wanderer RN is about to wander away. Life does involve change. Good luck with whatever you choose, and keep us posted @ Lost on the Floor.

Evernote is reviewed at Not Ratched.  I’ve been meaning to try it out, this may be the kick in the ass I need to get started.

Sean at My Strong Medicine has advice for co-workers with quirks.

Infusion Nurse has a few interesting tidbits to share in the, wait for it…. Infusion Field…surprised huh?

Coach Keith explains what nurses do, @Digital Doorway.  Hope you had a great time off!

An introduction/explanation of special needs nursing,  heartfelt and moving by Wendy at the J.E.R.K. LNC blog, and no that is not a joke about JERK.

The Corpus Collosum is explained by Jo at Head Nurse.  (that is in the brain for you non-medical lurkers…)

Nurse K at Crass-Pollination has an announcement for drug abusers.

Impacted Nurse has a few interesting CT scans.  Shroud of Turin comes to mind….

Stress in young women: a review of recent research.  The topic at Nursetopia.

JD, aka toronto emerg at Those Emergency Blues gets two entries: the stud man video might appeal to some, and the bottle/beach/snow  video to others.  I know it’s cliche, but ya never know what ya gonna get there.

Running Wildly has a funny chicken story. Really, it’s funny, I mean what are neighbors for if you can’t harass them a little.

DOT is reviewed by Lorrie at Correctional Nurse-no that’s not the department of transportation…

Embezzlement is the sad topic by Barbara at The Nurse Practitioner Business Blog. A most unfortunate concern for anyone running their own business.

ER Nurse Joy’s Tumblr is always worth a visit, I’m not sure which one I liked best so I’ll let you decide.

And thanks to Joni at Nursetopia for permission to use her free compliments artwork.  I love the idea of handing out compliments to co-workers.  We’ve been discussing the importance of teamwork here lately and this is a perfect way to build team spirit.

I am as guilty as anyone of taking my staff, co-workers, and hospital employees for granted.  I’ll be printing out something similar and begin giving them away. I’ll let you know how it goes!

Have a great week, and thanks so much for reading. I do appreciate your support and value your time!

Dean

Great Nursing Blogs

The latest edition of the Best In Nurse Blogs-my bi-weekly focus on the best writing by, for, or about Nurses!

This edition of The Best In Nurse Blogs reminds me of the opening line in A Tale of Two Cities…..It was the best of times and the worst of times… or something like that…

The Nursing Blogosphere seems to have upped it’s game recently as I had so many worthy posts to choose. So many great reads  that I had to leave many deserving articles out.

Now some will say my bi-weekly Best In Nurse Blogs is highly subjective, and they would be correct.  It’s my blog and my choices…

But I try to highlight articles that I personally enjoy, and that I think deserve to be read by a wider audience.  I also try not to overwhelm my readers with too many posts.

I think the one’s chosen lose a little luster if there are too many links for the average reader to digest.  But if you don’t see your favorite article or post here, feel free to leave a comment with your recommendation and it’s link.

Let’s get started!

Best Nursing Blogs

At Your Cervix has a great post on understanding L&D patient/nurse communication.

Codeblog has a review of a new professional shoe from Timberland…..  Maybe they’ll let me try a pair…Hint, Hint!

Crass-Pollination explains the importance of clandestine detective work as an ER Nurse-and you won’t guess why-so  just go read it!  What an honor for the Doc in question…

Nurse Keith has an article on Tea Tree Oil at BDO.com where he is a frequent contributor-I recommend Tea Tree Oil as a treatment for skin inflammation/sun burn.

Head Nurse is Pissed about cat abuse!

Phil at Health is Social waxes philosophically about Twitter.  And yes I used Twitter and philosophy in the same sentence.  What of it????

Nursetopia is helping you with your job interview.

JD at Those Emergency Blues gives great advice on emptying out a crowded ER waiting room. Check out the butterfly pic while you are at it on the home page!

Sharing your Womb? The Nerdy Nurse has the story!

Caleb @ Rookie Nurse gives quitter advice.  Sounds like it’s worth a try!

And finally,

Congrats, kudos, and waytogo’s to Shawn Kennedy and Amy Collins at AJN’s Blog Off the Charts for winning several Magnum Opus  Awards! Kewl!

Nursing Blog Round-up:

I don’t expect any sympathy for the self-imposed stress of  having to choose from the many deserving blogs/writers out there writing by, about, or for nurses but you can’t blame me for tryin…

Enjoy these writers, and when you visit, make sure you tell ‘em:  Dr Dean sent ya!

Best In Nurse Blogs: Happy Nurses Week Edition!

Happy Nurses Week

As Nurses Week Runs from May  6th to the 12th, I had a decision.  Do I publish my Best of Nurse Blogs post at the beginning or at the end of Nurses Week.

Publishing today allows me to highlight the many posts this past week by nurses about Nurses Week, plus I took my wonderful wife out of town for Mother’s Day last weekend.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

We began our trip in a very sad place however.  We had business in  the Tuscaloosa/Birmingham area.  The storm devastation was heartbreaking.  I’ll be writing about it later this week.  We finished up the week at the beach and had a wonderful, relaxing time.

I read about 5 novels in three days-no personal finance or medical articles allowed. I stayed off the computer except for the minimal to keep things going here!

Please check out the article by Megan Krischke at Nurse ConnectExperts Offer Advice for Increasing Nurses’ Earning Potential.

I was honored to be on a great expert panel.

Hope you had a great Nurses Week, and now enjoy…..

The best in Nurse Blogs:

Running Wildly has a unique makeup application going. Pics too!

Those Emergency Blues writes about the  unfortunate suicide related to a  medication error.

Correctional Nurse has a video on her field of Correctional Nursing in honor of Nurses Week!

Impacted Nurse gives you Mindset Tips-great suggestions.

The Nursing Show features a post on safety tools. It’s not the tool, but the one holding it, is what I heard growing up. over, and over, and over…

Nurse Teeny at the Makings of a Nurse writes about covering your ass… Interesting perspective.  Documenting good care is not the same as CYA to me.

At Your Cervix had a special party!

JParadisi RN writes about no recognition being great recognition sometimes.  Go read it, it’s hard to explain-she does a wonderful job!

Crass-pollination has a giveaway. Deadline is today, so don’t put it off.

Sean at My Strong Medicine has words about a few challenging patients...

Nursetopia has a resource of free NIH tools for most any clinical situation.  No need to reinvent the wheel if you need a protocol or list.

Head Nurse got shaken up….Literally.

Infusion Nurse is also celebrating Nurses Week, with a few facts and figures.  Check em out.

Nurse Story celebrates nursing week-wish I’d thought of that!

The Nerdy Nurse has a contest and giveaway in celebration of Nurses Week! Go, win already.  Tell her I sent you!

Best In Nurse Blogs: Image Edition

Nurse Blogs

I’ve been blogging for a about 15 months now.  Just a child if you ask Kim at Emergiblog…But it is weird how things run in blog cycles.  I don’t know if bloggers are psychic, or they see a post and it gets in their brain, or if it is just the moon (where is my almanac anyway?).

This week there were several posts about Nurses and their image.  The lifelong debate between the nurse as caretaker, rather than thinker/treater.  The white hatted (not hated) angel vs the drug/sex craved television portrayals….

Or could it be that we, in our profession,  are just being sensitive….

  • I know I look nothing like George Clooney, during his ER doctor days or now for that matter.

    (by caricaturas c.c.)

  • I hope  I am not the jerk that House manages to pull off without even trying.
  • No one has called me Doogie in a couple of decades.
  • I am never confused with that other Dr Burke, (Preston) for some reason….
  • And I keep waiting on my wife to have my pipe and slippers ready, with my paper neatly folded in my easy chair with a martini at hand….

Stereotypes and type-casting will be with us for ever.  We just have to be who we are, professionals all.  And maybe learn to not take ourselves, and our television characters so seriously.  (but did you hear they were bringing back Dallas?)

Let’s get to:

Best In Nurse Blogs

Nerdy Nurse has a rant about her hospital CEO’s lack of judgment..

Donna Cardillo RN writes about nurses and aging at American Nurse Today.  Do you know any nurses who shouldn’t be working due to age?

#RNChat-the weekly nursing twitter chat was about Nurses dealing with grief, and the loss of their patients. The effects are real.  How do you deal with it? (Check out #RNChat Thursday-9pm eastern)

This article discusses lack of education of nurses in Florida and it’s implications on health care outcomes.  Love to hear your thoughts. Do more advanced degree’d nurses improve patient care?

ImpactedNurse: Ian discusses Alarm Fatigue….(what’s that beeping?)

Keith at Digital Doorway re-posts a great review of nurses image-of themselves and the public.  Thought provoking…as usual!

Nurse K at Crass Pollination reviews an ER Work-up! Funny, and sad at the same time!  Multiply that by hundreds of thousands of ER patients and you have-”budget surplus!”

Not Nurse Ratched is introduced to the “choking game”-crazy, dangerous stuff! Not LOL…(yes I read her newest post.)

PhilBaumann wants to limit tweets to 2# (hash-tags) for you non-twitter peoples…Makes sense to me #tired #irritated #reading#so #many #hashtags!

Those Emergency Blues writes about Grey’s Anatomy, and more thoughts on nurses image.

Rebekah, writing at Scrubs, thinks it’s time for a nurses name change-RN anyone?  More image stuff,  must be Oscar Week!

Sean at My Strong Medicine writes about extreme punishment for kids… What are your thoughts?

Bonnie RN writes a list for those looking for alternative living arrangements for their elderly parents.  My mom would have wanted happy hour and a beer tap on the list-bless her!  She was of the generation that  thought 5:00 meant something…

And Jamie at The Nursing Show has a podcast on nursing education.  One of the panel members is the above mentioned Kim from Emergiblog! Check it out!

Focus on Nursing Blogs

Best In Nurse Blogs: Egyptian Freedom Edition

Saturday, February 12th, 2011

Best In Nurse Blogs

Freedom is like a lighthouse beacon,  continuously lit to welcome the storm torn ship home.  It is the friend of the disenfranchised, the lost, and the hungry.  Unfortunately, there are those who will use the taste of freedom now being served in Egypt for their own evil ends.

There are those who wish to have no freedom of religion, freedom for women to work, and  vote who will be working to take advantage of the power vacuum that is Egypt.

Rally For Egypt

Let us all say a prayer, or at least a moment of pause for support for those who have sacrificed during these last two weeks to gain that first sip of freedom.  I wish them safety in their long journey, and hope they are successful in building a country based on freedom and tolerance.

Now to this weeks

Nurse Blog Best!

Phil at Health Is Social writes Why I Became A Nurse, a great piece of self-introspection.  Read it to the end!

It must be the week of retrospection as JParadisi also remembers her early nursing career.

Sarah Beth RN writes about the continuing controversy regarding nurses delivering primary care.  This issue will be more important as what we call Obamacare becomes fully implemented.

Documenting IV insertion/site data is on Infusion Nurse.  Documentation is always a good  thing.  And congrats on IV Infusion Nurse week, didn’t know about it either! Better late than never…

My Strong Medicine: Sean has a new app for his iPhone.  Reading one of his other posts, he will soon be looking for the snow blower app!

joni @ Nursetopia discusses the third brain. Where is my first and second one, you might be asking?

The Nerdy Nurse is ranting over new uniform policies, but I think she is ranting more from a perceived, (probably not paranoia) lack of respect!

Terri at Nurse Story reviews an article about family presence during ED resuscitation.

isn’tshe.. @The Dog Ate My Care Plan has senior jitters-go calm her down!

Those Emergency Blues is off for a week, but her reruns are still worth reading-she has 500+ posts and poems….

The Muse RN links to a sad story of a nurse selling himself to the highest bidder.  Sad!

Gina RN from Code Blog has a guest post on Kevin MD. Food allergies can be deadly, and she brings up a bigger point regarding the role of teachers.

Off the Charts has a round-up, with a link to an article about breast cancer treatment, and lymph node resection. May change the standard of care.

And finally, this weeks #RN Chat, the twitter chat for nurses and other interested parties-included several of us MD’s, patient advocates, and more- was about the role of advanced practice nurses.  A sane and practical discussion, which is more than can be said in several state legislatures right now!

Check out #RNchat at 9pm eastern on Thursdays.

Thanks for reading, and make sure you drop by the blogs above and say hello!  Let em know Dr Dean sent you.  Bloggers love comments and additions to their discussion, so don’t be a lurker.  Say hey!
