Money Management

Please Check Out This Video About Today’s Money Management Post:

Money Management, Personal Finance, Planned Spending

These are all terms for getting control of your money.

Why should you want to????

Ten Reasons on why you should manage your money better:

  1. Margin-Margin means, that if the crap hits the fan you don’t panic, you have an emergency fund to deal with it.
  2. Giving -you see a need, now you can give.
  3. Better marriage- money problems,  a common cause of marital distress.
  4. Free time-Maybe you think the way to having more money is to work all the time.  The way to having more is usually making life simpler, enjoying your family and friends, while spending much less.
  5. Raising Children-raising children who are not spoiled, expecting life to provide them with their every whim.
  6. Freedom-If you have solid financial pillars in place, and decide to take your life in a different direction, the chance of success will be much higher-Most new ventures fail due to lack of financial capital to get you established.
  7. Serve-similar to give, but of your time-you want to do a retreat, go on a mission trip-you can just do it.
  8. Stress-damages your health, and your relationships-who needs it. Life is tough enough without money problems!!
  9. Independent-those who are dependent on others for their financial support, have lower self-esteem.
  10. Legacy-I don’t mean leaving your children a bunch of money to fight over.  I tell mine, if there is any money leftover, I just didn’t time it right!!!    Legacy means leaving the world a better place.  Fund a scholarship, help build a building at church. Leave something that shows the real YOU!

Extended warranties: Worthy or Worthless?

Extended Warranties

Extended warranties, written about in  the Wall Street Journal.

Are the extended warranties worth the cost?

Like most insurance policies, extended warranties are a guard against risk.  The risk of premature failure/breakdown of whatever product being warranted.  As the article mentions, Consumer Reports did a study of extended warranties, concluding, in general that extended warranties were not a good buy.  Why?   The amount of money saved, on average, was not worth the cost.

The article makes the point that  extended warranties offered frequently have a better profit margin built in, then the profit from selling the product in the first place.    Making the sales folks push them-I know many of you have sat through those pushy sales presentations-making you feel  like a dummy for not buying the warranty.

Many extended warranty offers you get phoned about, at the end of the built in warranty, are offers from third parties, not the original manufacturer-therefore how do you know if they are legitimate-buyer beware!!!

I know my pickup-paid for in cash of course-hit its five year powertrain guarantee a few months ago.  I received many un-solicited calls offering a new extended warranty around that time.  Since I never took the call, it was just left on voice mail, I don’t know if it was GM making the call, but I suspect it was a third party offer.

The majority of buyers of new cars this year, have actually purchased extended warranties, which I find surprising.

In my medical practice, extended warranties are almost required for expensive equipment.  Required because if you don’t buy them, you have to go to the end of the line, so to speak, if the equipment breaks down.  They will not guarantee prompt service without them.  They have you over the proverbial barrel.

I have made it a practice, however, to ignore extended warranties for purchases made for things around the house.  We have purchased a new washer, stove, and electronics in the past year, and have never regretted, so far, not paying for the extended warranty.

If you follow my guidelines on your purchases, making sure you buy quality for a good value, it is unlikely these days for the extended warranty to become necessary.

So what are your thoughts?  Let me know if you buy extended warranties and what your outcomes have been.

What is a Millionaire Nurse?

Monday, October 5th, 2009

I am not making the promise that all those who follow my money management recommendations will become a millionaire.  Although that is likely-not because of any magic I provide, but because of the power of compound interest.  Saving monthly at the beginning of your nursing career, in both your retirement accounts and your own personal accounts, will, over a 30-40 year career result in multi-millions of dollars saved.

If you are starting your millionaire nurse journey later in your career, then, you may not reach seven figures in savings, but you will be much more comfortable in your later years.  You will build a cushion to protect yourself and your family from the ups and downs of real life.

The secret is in living within your means during that time, to allow those steady savings to build up without constant withdrawals for so-called emergencies-like a new car or boat.

In this blog, over time, I will discuss techniques and tools to help make this basic advice easier to follow.  I hope to also use the power of the connectedness of the web, to provide you nurses  great savings and money management tips being published daily.

So in summary, a millionaire nurse, may not have a million dollars in the bank-YET.  But the millionaire nurse is a mindset – not just a person-who understands money, and themselves.

Until next time,

Dr. Dean

What is a Millionaire Nurse

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

My  blog is directed at nurses and their personal finances. My passion is teaching nurses and learning from nurses about managing their money and succeeding in building wealth.

Not just to have money, but to obtain freedom. The freedom to explore the world. The freedom to know that with life’s ups and downs, that they are not putting themselves and their family at risk by not building a sound financial support system.  The freedom to live their dreams, rather than being tied down by debt.

The current deep financial recession, along with all the hype about the proposed overhaul of the health care and health insurance system has all of us a little nervous.  With good reason.

I hope to accomplish this with sound, basic, and easy to understand financial and money management advice and support. occasionally a kick in the behind may be appropriate as well. I will try to identify great blogs, websites, articles and products that will help with these goals.

Their are a lot of great blogs, websites, books and other sources of information about learning and managing personal finances.  But none that I can find directed at nurses.  So this blog, and my other tools (soon to be published book-The Millionaire Nurse,  and website- www.themillionairenurse.com) will be directed at you nurses, using medical and technical terminology, to assist nurses in understanding financial information in a form that makes sense.

Please let me know your comments, questions, and any recommendations.

Thanks, Dr. Dean
