Friday Financial Follies:

The Friday Financial Follies (FFF) are designed to summarize the important financial issues of the week.

  •  Share the humor of  the FFF that are funny.
  • Make fun of the stupid.
  • Highlight those FFF you need to be aware of if you want to be financially well-grounded or is it well-rounded???

(Yes this was released  early in honor of Steve Jobs.)

Steve Jobs death, though not unexpected, dominated the news this  week.  He had a creative mind and built a tremendous legacy.  In describing his life,  hyperbole is still an understatement.

In Honor of Steve Jobs

We should all strive to live each day like he lived-like it was our last.  He had a passion for Apple and making products that worked beyond expectations.

He continued until the very end because he loved what he did.

He could of lived his last years in luxury and comfort anywhere in the world-but he kept working.

That kind of passion is what drives innovation.

I saw many with that passion at Fincon11 last weekend-the first conference of personal finance bloggers.

  • J Money at Budgets are Sexy and Love Drop is passionate about helping others in need.
  • Flexo at Consumerism Commentary is passionate, about being passionate. His intensity is amazing-but he’s not too busy to help us B-level bloggers….(some would say I’m being generous at B level)
  • Kay Lynn at Bucksome Boomer is passionate about being nice-everyone loves her.
  • Len Penzo is passionate about personal responsibility-and the passion for his family shines through in his writing.
  • Crystal at BITFS is passionate about life-the only person I know that still uses the term “holy moly” and it doesn’t sound strange.
  • Pat Flynn is passionate about teaching others how to make a side income.
  • Adam Baker at Man vs Debt  is passionate about making great products to help you teach and reach others.
  • Phil Taylor from PT Money  is passionate about building  a community among the diverse personal finance network.

And these are just a few of the great speakers, panelist, and fellow bloggers I was privileged meet, learn from, and  hang out with last weekend.

Friday Financial Follies

The rest of the news:

The US Senator from Nevada has proposed a 5% surtax on those earning a million/year to pay for Obama’s proposed jobs plan.  I will go out on a limb and predict it will go no where. (and no I wouldn’t be affected….But I would like to be…)

Speakin of Steve Job’s legacy:

The new iPhone five finally failed to wow unlike it’s predecessors…(and it’s new name is  iPhone 4S).  Unless you are a gamer, then it’s game changing!

Tiger selling watches again.

Tiger Woods begins his rehab as a spokesperson, with a new contract with Rolex.  Now he needs to learn how to win golf tournaments again, or he’ll be lucky to pitch Timex next.

Makin’  your own way soon to be an antique quaint notion?

Almost half of US households now receive government help (48.5%).  A new record.  This makes entitlement reform all the more important, but also more difficult.  More have skin in the federal giveaway game-cut, cut, cut-except what’s mine-is the new mantra.

Tablet Computer cheap

India announces a $35 tablet computer-trying to get it to all of it’s millions of young people.

Cars and Trucks-Sales Up!

As gas prices drop, Big SUV’s sales soar!   Is that good or bad?

Speaking of cars…GM seems about to agree to a new union contract.

Ford’s union deal also got a thumbs up.  May be time to begin to nibble on those auto stocks.

Personal Finance Reads:

FMF has a great review of his credit card rewards strategy.  I’m currently using the PenFed 5% on gas, and an Amex Delta card for my rewards strategy.

Khaleef  at Faithful With a Few has linked to a great list of October giveaways-not scary at all…

CAPE, no not Superman’s, not Buffalo,  not Canaveral, and not “town”-this CAPE will help you with choosing stocks…is at Invest It Wisely.

Alltop has a great info-graphic on the cost of attending an NFL game… The short answer is too  much. But sports are good, I said so!

Hope you have a great weekend, and thanks so much for dropping by.

I value and respect your time.

But remember, a goal without action is just a dream.  To make your dreams happen YOU have to do the work.  If someone does it for you, you will not appreciate it or grow from it.  That’s just the way it is.
