Motivation: What’s The Big Secret?

Motivation

“Your daughter will be dead by noon tomorrow if you don’t come up with 1,000 bucks by then!”

Easy huh.  Nothing would stop 99.9% of  parents  having 1,000 bucks in 24 hours if a precious daughter’s life depended on it. That’s motivation.

“Your spouse will contract AIDS and die a horrible death if you can’t give me $1,000 by next week.”

Again, easy peasy as my friend Penzo likes to say.  That’s motivation!

“Your mom will suffer with diabetes and kidney failure if you don’t pay me $1,000 by the end of the month.”

Done.  That’s motivation!

These are simple decisions we would all make without thinking about it. Your daughter, your spouse, your Mom.  We would do anything to protect our family.

Maybe the ex-Navy Seals among us would may also think about taking somebody out with a head shot for threatening these people.  The mortals among us would take care of our family, then maybe start thinking of revenge.

For many, owing a thousand bucks to someone is either

  • Paralyzing: “Woe is me, I’ll never be able to pay off this card…..”
  • Not important: “Hey it’s just a thousand bucks, and Citi (insert Discover, AMEX, Capital One…) has plenty of money.  I’m not going to worry about it.  And Obama tells me it’s their fault for loaning me the money for that vacation anyway.  You know all the fine print I didn’t read on the interest rates  and  minimum payment stuff. I’ll deal with that later!”

Isn’t it interesting how different  your mindset can be between coming up with a thousand for safety of our loved ones vs paying off a debt?  It’s the same thousand dollars.  Paying someone 1,000 bucks is paying someone 1,000 bucks.

Taking Care of Business

I know how quickly I can clear my desk and eliminate my to-do list when I’m about to leave on a pleasure trip.  If I’m on call the weekend and stuck at home, that stack of paperwork will remain, getting deeper and deeper.

Mind Games and Goal Completion

Our sense of urgency is all a mind game.  Can we accomplish our goals without creating a crisis?

The trick to being successful is to keep our urgency and productivity as close to a laser-like focus  as possible….without the fear and panic that goes along with having a family member in danger.

How can you do that? What’s the secret in that kind of productivity?

If I could bottle and sell it, would I be sitting here pounding away on this keyboard?  Nah…

But what would it look like?

The secret is:

  • To live life like there is no guarantee of tomorrow, for you or your family.
  • To have a clear and easily explainable goal.  (1000 bucks in 24 hrs or someone you love dies…pretty simple huh)  If you don’t know where to start to accomplish a goal, then it’s probably too complicated.  Break ‘em down  to their basic steps or parts!
  • To have a sense of urgency that you feel not just intellectually, but down to your marrow.  “This is important and nothing will get in my way till I complete my goal/project/task/action.”

No, I don’t think we can live that way every day 24/7.  We can live that way much much much more than we do.  We can create that sense of urgency about the importance of our family life.   Our projects at work.  Our marriage.

We just need to de-clutter our mind, focus on what’s important right now, and practice!  The more we do it, the more it will become second nature.  I’ll try to see if I can be more consistent with my own productivity daily  rather than it showing up just the day before a vacation.

What is getting in your way???

Goals and More Goals

I thought I would do a Yakezie Roundup on Goal Setting for the New Year, with I hope, stinging commentary…Well, maybe not stinging, more like supportive. Well, maybe not supportive, how bout just a little commentary.

I  think it helps us formulate our own goals and plans when we see what others have done-how they go about their thinking and how they prioritize their own life.

Things have been so crazy for me recently:

  • Death in the family
  • Sister-in-law with a broken leg has joined the household in a wheel chair for a couple months
  • Son’s wedding
  • Sinus infection from Hell! (and since my Monistat samples haven’t worked, maybe I ought to see a real Doc!)
  • Christmas
  • My nurses personal finance course “The 5-A’s to Financial Health” launching right before Thanksgiving-(not too smart in retrospect….)

Soooo, I haven’t had time to do my own goal setting, so that will come soon!

Yakezie, The Best in Personal Finance Blogs, member Goal Posts!

Sam at Financial Samurai has a great list of plans for 2011. I too want to work on my writin, cause it ain’t too good.

Budgeting in The Fun Stuff, Crystal writes her goals in “S” fashion.  My readers will probably use another “S” word for my post when I get around to it…

GOAL! (by urban_data)

Buy Like Buffett- Mark hasn’t done a goal post, but I always love to learn about investing geniuses since I would love to be one-so I let this slide!!!

Alan at Canadian Finance Blog reviews 2010 goals and sets new ones for this year.  Accountability!

Kay Lynn at Bucksome Boomer is going on an Alaskan Cruise, (paid for of course) as part of her goals.  I am not sure cruising and weight loss are compatible, but good luck!

My Journey To Millions-Evan has his goals going.   He has a lot on his plate…Focused Fatherhood being #1.

Goal Setting and Planning

Goal setting and planning are the foundation of becoming successful with your money management.

I am headed to a retreat today, focused on my medical practice to set goals, and plan for the next 5 years.

Long Range Goals

Making long range goals, then short term action steps to support those goals, is the key to managing your money.  So, you and your spouse, need to set aside a time soon, to plan.  Schedule a time, block out a few hours, get a baby sitter.

Turn off the TV, cell phone-get rid of all distractions.   Use a pad or even a white-board and put your dreams and aspirations in black and white.  Review your financial situation, and what needs to happen with your money to support your goals.

Planning:

If you want an advanced degree in nursing, plan your career around going back to school, begin to save the money for tuition or the decrease in income that will occur when you are taking classes.

Don’t just wake up one day-decide to go back to school-quit your job-borrow two gurneys full of money-and put your family in financial trouble, because you were too selfish, lazy, or stupid (use your own adjective)   to plan.

I will soon be introducing a template to help with goal setting and planning, to help families with this step.

So don’t let another day go by.  Stop what you are doing and make an appointment with yourself, and whoever else needs to be there.  Do a little thinking and brainstorming before that day comes and be prepared for negotiation.  Your plans have to mesh with your partners, if you are not single.  This can sometimes be difficult.  So be prepared to give a little.

If you can’t come to agreement on all items-save those for a later discussion, after each has had a chance to think it over.

And if you are single, all you have to do, is convince yourself-how easy is that!!!!

Plan a Family Financial Planning Retreat!

So, plan your own version of a retreat today.  Repeat it every year. Review your goals, and plans at least several times per year to make sure you are on track.

Good luck-and don’t bother trying to find me today-I an unavailable…..(yes- sometimes I follow my own advice!)

Let us hear your suggestions, and plans for goal setting.

Top Ten List: The Things Millionaire Nurses Need to do Before January 1!

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

January 1 is fast approaching.  The charge nurse is busy fighting over who works Christmas eve/day and New Years eve/day.   Nursing students are finishing exams.  I have seen exciting post’s on Facebook about graduating!!!! Yeaaaa-but now the clock starts ticking on student loans, doesn’t it???

Sorry,  like that new admission you always get, 10 minutes before change of shift, sometimes bad things happen to good people, but we gonna be real here.

So in honor of Dave Letterman, (or should it be dishonor) here are the top ten things you need to do before the first of January:

  1. Set a time for your goals and planning-then do it.  Click the links here for earlier posts on goals.
  2. Check your free credit report at Annual Credit Report here.  Study it for inaccuracies.
  3. Do a financial statement of net worth.
  4. Review/do a budget, if you don’t have one.
  5. Find out the amount of interest on loans you paid this year, if you don’t know how, see this post.
  6. Buy term life insurance or make arrangements to do so, if you already have life insurance,- make sure the beneficiaries are correct.
  7. Make sure your will, and health care power of attorney are up to date.  Check out this post for a kit to help.
  8. Get your end of year tax documents together-get that folder now, ready for the statements, W-2′s etc you or your accountant will need.
  9. Meet/call your accountant to make sure you don’t need to change withholding, 401-k amount, and whether any of the new tax changes will affect you next year.  If you don’t have an accountant, you can run the numbers on your taxes/talk with your personnel department regarding the withholding.
  10. Review all of your bills/services to see if you can drop your monthly payments-such as car insurance, cable, internet, cell-phone.  Make a list and schedule calls, do comparison shopping to drop your bills.  Negotiate-see this post by Ramit Sethi on negotiating.  Use this technique to negotiate your cable bill, phone bill and when your are shopping, especially at stores that you are dealing with the owner.  And certainly, when you go for your year end salary and performance review, these are great things to know.

For a great accountability exercise, print this out and check things off, similar to the post made at 2 Dog Casa, with my previous post on Twelve Ways Not to be a Millionaire Nurse.

So take some time, when you finish your shopping, gift giving, partying, and eating, to look after your important financial affairs before the end of the year. If you cannot get them all done, look at your calendar, and write deadlines for each one today, that means today, before the day is over….

New Year's Resolutions: Do Millionaire Nurses Need Em?

Sunday, December 13th, 2009

I will be honest, I am not a New Year’s resolution guy.  I do think goal setting is the first step in gaining control of your money.  So what’s the difference?

New Year’s Resolutions are usually:

  1. Poorly thought out-How many resolutions have you heard your friends and co-workers spout out as they had their third glass of champagne or beer-”I am going to quit drinking…..(insert- lose weight, exercise, get out of debt, write a journal….)
  2. Non-specific-”Losing weight is a thought, not a goal or a plan-” I am going to lose 15 lbs. this year”- better.  I am going to lose 15 lbs. this year by losing 1/4 pound a week, by cutting out my starch’s, while exercising 30 minutes per day/5 days a week-Now you are getting it!
  3. Superficial-Many New Year’s Resolutions are done because you are supposed to do em.  So the smoker says he is going to quit smoking, the drinker says he will quit drinking, the spender says he will quit spending-not because he wants to change, but because he thinks society/friends/co-workers think he should.
  4. Short-term/short sighted-Spending less is a good fleeting notion, but why-what is it about your relationship with  money that you would like to change?  Do you want a comfortable retirement, send your kids to college, buy a car?  A clear long term definition/vision of where you want to be is necessary.

So, do I think New Years Resolutions are evil?  Of course not.  Do I think they have about as much value as opening a fortune cookie-yep, thats about right.

So instead of a New Years Resolution, how about developing your goals and a plan.  See this post about goal setting.

When you have done a thoughtful/deliberate job of goal setting, then the next step is accountability-”How do I do that, Dr Dean?”

I am so glad you asked!

  • Set up a monthly accountability session-a time you set aside to review your goals and how you stand-if your goals are of a very long-term nature-quarterly or semi-annual reviews are ok. Make an appointment with yourself and spouse/partner.
  • Publish your goals-except maybe the one about taking your bosses job,–that one may need to be your little secret goal…. You needed something to do with that refrigerator magnet you got for Christmas last year.
  • Write them down-not quite the same as publish-publish means put them out for others to see, writing them down means the process of making them real-you need to do both.
  • An accountability partner-no that is not the same as a CPA lover-just someone to hold your feet to the fire.  If your goal is to be a better public speaker-join Toastmaster and let them abuse you.  Lose weight-Weight Watchers comes to mind. Hire a coach-if you can afford one.  The YMCA here used to have a wandering personal trainer-believe me I worked harder when he was yelling-”one more, one more!”

So go forth and make a plan, Stan.  Try to do more, Roy!  Set yourself free, Lee!

Sorry, got carried away.  Let me know if you are setting goals to improve your financial situation, and if you need an accountability partner, you can probably find one here. Good Luck!
