Millions Without Power
Cil and I spent last weekend at a camp in Lewisburg, West Virginia. No, not a vacation type camp. We were there to provide support of power companies’ effort to get electricity back on in the wilds of W.V… The temporary camp held 600 people, all in a small parking lot outside a bowling alley.
Being without power for days at the time is always a pain. Things we take for granted like air conditioning, food in the freezer, watching the boob tube at night are suddenly not an option.
The power companies take it as a personal affront when their customers are without power and pull out all stops in getting the electrons going and flowing again. They hire, beg, and borrow linemen, tree trimmers, and scouts from all over to help.
This is old fashioned back breaking work, putting up new poles and stringing power lines, frequently in the middle of a mountainside.
I saw linemen and women from all over the Eastern Seaboard pitching in to help. After 12-14 hours in the field, they would drag into the chow line, take a shower in the shower trailer, and then try to get a few hours sleep. Many sleeping in bunk trailers or their trucks and getting up at the break of day to do it again.
The caterers cooked in a temporary tent kitchen set up in a parking lot feeding 600 hungry folks 2 hot meals and a box lunch every day-getting by on 4-6 hours of interrupted sleep. You have to get up early, or not go to bed to cook breakfast for 600 people….
In the past-before my involvement in this business- it never occurred to me what happened when mother nature went wild and the lights went out in Georgia… When my power has gone off, I just called the power company and waited.
Now I know about the massive mobilization of dedicated men and women who drive huge trucks sometimes halfway across the country to help get the power back on for your grandmother or grandchild. Another group of people is required to feed and board them.
Cool stuff indeed!
The next time you see a power company truck convoy on the road, know they are leaving their homes to go help other people. Give them a thumbs up and your prayers.
Top Ten Growing Businesses
What do Dollar General, Apple, and Tractor Supply have in common? They made it into this list of the top ten growing businesses in the USA. Try to guess the others then go check it out! I didn’t do so well….
Missing South Park?
If you are a South Park fan and have Direct TV, you may be in withdrawal. A contract dispute has meant the cancellation of numerous Viacom channels on Direct TV including The Comedy Channel, Nickelodeon, and my MTV. (not really in years…)
What do you get when you throw Needless Markup (Dallas based luxury department store) and that French discount giant Tarjay with couture designers in a barrel and shake it up? Either high priced garbage or low priced ‘gotta have ‘em’ clothes. I hope the latter…Ya gotta respect both companies for getting out of their comfort zone and trying something different!
“I hear my Momma calling, ‘gotta go!”
eHarmoney is helping you handle disharmony in your dating life by a new app, called Bad Date Rescue. Hit the app on your smart phone, and you’ll get a pretend emergency call giving you a ditching excuse. The problem is, now that everyone has heard of this, even the most emergent real deal calls will be looked on skeptically by your date…”My boss called and we have an emergency meeting!” “yeah right” he says…

Len Penzo is in Hawaii. So he makes his 90+ year old Aunt Doris write for him while he lays on the beach with an umbrella drink. Fortunately for us, Aunt D. shares the secrets to a long life. BTW, she named her walker ‘Johnny’. I’m inspired, I’m going to name my first cane, ‘Abel’. Len I hope you at least brought her back a Kit Kat bar or something.

Though I was missing due to my emergency West Virginia trip, the Two Guys and Your Money Podcast went on without me. Money tools was the interview segment and the roundtable topic was financial scams. The roundtable may be the biggest scam of all….(just kidding Joe! The rest of the panel are smart well grounded folks-not sure why they need me except for comic relief) Don’t worry, I’ll be there next week. (you were worried, weren’t you?)
