Nurse Blog

To continue my bi-weekly series to give you a taste of the best in Nurse Blogs, here is another Christmas week attempt.  Hopefully you are busy getting ready to see and enjoy your extended family.  But I also know from experience, (I am on call Christmas week myself) that some of you are working.  Thanks for doing what you do!

Nurse Story has a great response to us condescending Docs and our “Why didn’t you  go to medical school?” comments.  Personally, I wonder why anyone would want to go to medical school…..just sayin.

This article in the New England Journal addresses the role of advanced nursing practitioners and primary health care delivery.

jparadisirn has a neat Christmas tree.

Sean at My Strong Medicine has written about grades and nursing school.  I agree that common sense and work ethic have more to do with nursing success.

Shawn at AJN writes about the failure of the health care system in dealing with caregivers at home. With the economics of health care as they are, this needs to be shoved to the forefront.  It is a lot less expensive to keep our elders in their home.  But expecting an 80 year old to give 24/7 care to another 80 year old ain’t happenin… Families need to be persistent in their request for assistance, and the system needs to decide how to adequately reimburse those who are providing the teaching and support necessary!
Speaking of caregivers, BonnieRN writes about the Beads of Courage program.
Codeblog, Tales of a Nurse has interviewed a Director of Nursing in her interview series.  See what life is like being the boss, (team leader….)

Keith at Digital Doorway has, as usual a thought provoking article about the most common form of patients committing suicide.  One of the more common causes of burnout in primary care.  How to motivate people who will not take care of themselves.  A “motivation pill” would rival Viagra,  well maybe not Viagra, but …..
A guest post at ER Nurse Joy explains the highs and lows of a new grad in a challenging new job!

Infusion Nurse answers a FAQ...
A shocking tale of V-Fib was written by Nerdy Nurse.

SeeJaneNurse’s newest is “Communicate“.  One of my favorite movie lines, “What we haaave heah is a failure to communicate!”

Merry Christmas to all and thanks for all you do for your community!

Best In Nurse Blogs

In this week of Thanksgiving, take the time to re-connect with your family and friends.  And give thanks for all the wonderful opportunities available to us every day, compared to many in the world!  And thank you so much for reading!

Thanks for employee benefits:

Thanks for Paid Sick Days!

  • Toronto Emerg writes about sick time and nurses. Have to agree with her sentiment.  As an employer there is always this push pull about having employees out.   Especially in a small facility, where back-up is limited.  But infectious disease issues are certainly real!  Read it and let’s hear your comments!

Thanks for medical advances:

Thanks for peer review:

  • Rehab RN was joyful at the positive accreditation inspection.  Our facility just went through the full joyous inspection, but got glowing review!  Congrats to them! Pat on the back and all that-(they would rather have pizza!)

Thanks for laughter:

Thanks for those who protect and serve:

Give thanks for being here:

Thanks for families

Thanks for good health:

Thanks for Mentors:

Thanks for freedom of expression:

Thanks again to all of you who read this, and to my staff- at my office and at The Millionaire Nurse- and to all those who dedicate their lives to helping others,

Happy Thanksgiving

Best In Nurse Blogs

Welcome to another edition of the Best In Nurse Blogs.  Twice a month, I try to highlight what is going on in the world of Nurse Blogging.   Please feel free to comment if you have a favorite nurse blogger not on my blog-roll.

First, I will take Blog Owners privilege to highlight an interview of yours truly at Nurse Zone.  Thanks Glenna.

Irma, at Nurse.com has an End of Shift Smile.  She has a great smile anytime!

(by noel feans)

Donna Cardillo RN has a great article on New Nurses Finding Work!

J Paradisi RN discusses reading body language of your patients-great advice!

Off the Charts @ AJN has another article on nurses finding work and keeping it in this digital age! Not surprising the posts about finding jobs in this economy.  Though nurses in general have survived the economic upheaval better than many careers.

What A Nurse writes about the frustrations of caring for family members. Here Here, I will drink to that!

Not Nurse Ratched, contributes to the Doctor/Nurse conflict discussion.

Haiti, and its cholera epidemic is the title of Toronto Emerg’s latest post.  A hurricane is the last thing those folks need right now!

Barbara, at the Nurse Practioner’s Business Blog, was interviewed by Reach MD!  Cool, congrats!

Nurse Me has this poem/song that is worth reading! The Deathbed Crash!

More Nurse Blogs

Terri, @onlinenursing, has this guest post about using social tools in nursing education. Her students have been doing great work learning about the use of social media in communication.

Nerdy Nurse has a great post about bullying in Nursing-Go read it, and let me know your thoughts…

Infusion Nurse has an important article about Self-Disclosure!   Read this before you apply for your next job.

Lisa Stern at Clinical Advisor has a great article on Common Sense-which ain’t always so common….

Kim at Emergiblog writes about peace and quiet when giving meds….Good luck with that!

Karen at Nurse.com has written about Infomatics in Nursing-bringing care further into the digital age.

Sean@ My Strong Medicine writes about a study on coffee and stroke.  Uh oh….And check out his article on Daylight Savings Time, while you are there.

@nursingpins writes about a case of two nurses indicted in Nevada over NICU catheter problems… disturbing if nurses blamed prematurely…

Thank you!

Thanks for your support of these great nurse blogs.  Go by and visit, and- “us bloggers luv us some comments,” as we say down here in the south-so let ‘em know Dr Dean sent ya!

Nurses Who Blog, or Bloggers that are Nurses?

Sunday, August 8th, 2010

A roundup of Nurses who Blog:

Joni, a new nurse blogger, writes at Nursetopia, about a nurse who sailed around the world with her family for seven years! Great story. Visit her blog, and welcome her to the online Nurse Blogger community.

Change of Shift” is up at Emergiblog-check out Kim’s hard work!

Nurse Keith at Digital Doorway discusses an ER visit.

Head Nurse writes about a single minded cardiologist.  In my specialty, we have a similar problem.  Nobody wants to “check down there” so let’s order a CT scan or US for that minor symptom rather than do a good ole pelvic….

One Nursing Hero

More Nurse Blogs:

Lorry, at Correctional Nurse features the care of prisoners with cancer.  I have been seeing Lorry’s tweets @lorryshoenly  If you are in the correctional field of nursing or, thinking about it-follow her.

See Jane Nurse has Love-IV-bottle that and sell it!

Sean at My Strong Medicine warns about “toning shoes”.  I recently bought a pair, will let you know the results of my study of “one”.

JParidisiRn writes about being comfortable with the squishy.  Interesting…. And thanks for the thank-you post.  I appreciate your being a reader/supporter!

At Your Cervix writes about the C-section rate, continually climbing.  I feel like a mastodon at times.  I stopped doing OB about 5 years ago now.  We actually tried to keep our rate as a department below 25%.  What a change in a short period of time.

Code Blog, discusses changes in perspectives.

Phil Baumann at Health is Social discusses social media, and health-care executives. Social media is here to stay.  The better the dialog, the more likely we can  enjoy the benefits.

Other Nurse Bloggers:

Obviously this is not a complete list of nurses who blog.  Alltop’s nursing list is a start.  Many of the nurse bloggers linked today, have extensive blogrolls.

And if you are a nurse blogger and are not on my nurse blogroll-make a comment, and I will add you.

Post-script:

As most of you know, I am not a nurse, though I did stay at a Holid…… Nah, won’t finish that thought.  I am married to a nurse, who is now in Public Health, having done time in ER, Hospice, and Postpartum.  So, though I do belong to the evil Doctors rank, who are somewhere between dog poo, and a migraine on most nurses scale of respect-I try to treat the nurses in my daily life as I would like to be treated.

Money, Medicine and Twitter: What a Great Combo!

Sunday, August 1st, 2010

Money  Medicine and Twitter:

I wanted to highlight a few of the folks who I follow, and are worth following on Twitter.  And don’t forget me, I am @DrDeanBurke-please add me to your follow list.

This is just a partial list, so if you are on my Twitter feed, don’t get your feelings hurt, this series will continue.  I hope to add more of you who also Blog and Tweet.  So leave your twitter handle in the comments, and Blog titles as well, if you have one.

I just didn’t understand Twitter for a long time.  I still work for a living.  And trying to get a sense of what Twitter was all about in the little spare time I had, just wasn’t working.  All of the guru’s in Social Media kept saying how valuable Twitter was, but I couldn’t make it work.

Then I said, well-other people seem to get this- so, let’s just ask em.

So I Tweeted- “Help me, I can’t get control or understand Twitter, what am I doing wrong?” or something similar in less than 140 characters, of course.

Sean, a nurse blogger and fitness guy, who blogs at  My Strong Medicine,  and tweets as @bthenextstep …. said “Try Tweet Deck!  It will help you get organized, make lists or columns with different categories, help you time your tweets.”

Twitter Products that work:

So I downloaded TweetDeck, a free program, and got started.  Now since then, I have learned that HootSuite is a similar product that has its strong supporters-I haven’t tried it yet.  Let me know your thoughts and suggestions.  And if you haven’t joined the Twitter world, go for it!  Its fun, and can be addicting

Today, I wanted to recognize fellow Bloggers who Tweet, both personal finance, and nurses, that support The Millionaire Nurse Blog, along with a few nurses who Tweet, that may not be Bloggers, but are worth following, just for fun or  for the info they provide.

Let’s start with money-a few personal finance bloggers who tweet:

@BucksomeBoomer, blogs at The Bucksome Boomer.  She is great for a re-tweet and a running commentary on her business travels.

@centsciblelife, Kelly blogs at The Centsible Life, and is a social networking guru from the New York area.

@Elle_CM, Elle writes at Couple Money and tweets about anything.

@financialsamura, Sam’s controversial posts make you think at his blog,  The Financial Samurai.  And no I don’t know why he left off the i on his tweeter name.

@lenpenzo, Len’s wit and writing are equally sharp-be careful.  Check him out at LenPenzo.com

@deliverawaydebt Jeff who writes at Deliver Away Debt, has endless energy and good advice as he works multiple jobs to kill his debt.

@freefrombroke-is a heavy tweeter, and Blogs at Free From Broke

@notmadeofmoney blogs at Not Made of Money-and is always good for tweeting specials at grocery’s and pharmacies-among other things….  The host of this weeks Yakezie Carnival!

@pffirewall,  JM, at Personal Finance Firewall is always supportive, with re-tweets, and stumbles, check out his blog and follow!

Now for the Nurses who blog and Tweet-

Kim at Emergiblog, can be found @Emergiblog-she has been blogging and hosting Change Of Shift, a nurse/medical blog carnival since the dark ages….(Just kidding Kim)

jparadisi, blogs her art, or arts her blog at j paradisi rn and can be followed @jparadisirn

not nurse ratched blogs at Stethoscopes and is a techno, apple, photographer lover with a twist. @not_ratched

Don’t forget Sean mentioned above, @bthenextstep.

Phil Bauman RN is like me.  Has so many backgrounds-it is hard to keep up, but is now the founder of #RN Chat, keeping up with social media and technology with emphasis on health care.

Nurse and Personal Finance Bloggers who tweet

So go follow these great folks who blog and twitter to help others, whether in #nursing or #Personal Finance

And let me know if you aren’t on the list with your blog domain and twitter name-leave them in the comments for others to follow, and share your wisdom and wit!

And I will  try to do another post soon adding many great bloggers that tweet, or tweeters that blog!

Great Stories From Nurse Bloggers

Saturday, June 19th, 2010

For a review of what is going on with Nurse Bloggers, check out these sites and articles:

Emergiblog, writes about a blogging crisis of sorts. Since my blog is in it’s infancy, I can’t relate to a mid-blog crisis, but I think all of us who write regularly go through ups and downs in our creativity and energy!  Take two aspirin, and get back at it, is my free medical opinion, Kim! (and you get what you pay for!!!)

jparadisi writes, “It Ain’t No Sin To Be Glad You Are Alive” a well written glimpse into the lives of nurses.  Take a minute and read the post.  You will be glad you did.

At Nurse Zone, check  this post about OR Nurses asking for universal Time Out.  We have been doing Time Out at our facility for a couple of years now.  For you non-medical readers, Time Out is a brief moment before a surgical case is started inn the operating room. The OR is supposed to be silent, and the procedure, equipment, patients full name is announced-similar to a check list before takeoff in aplane.

Impacted Nurse, has this article about disaster response and nurses.  Particularly interested in the mental aspects of responding to disasters and its affect on the medical responders.

Nurse Practioner’s View encourages men to get Prostate Exams. Great advice.  I tell my patients that prostate cancer is God’s revenge on men, for Women’s suffering during childbirth.

At Your Cervix, writes about the dying art of hands on nursing. True in most parts of medicine.

Sean at Male Nurse, writes about falling off the fitness/healthy eating train. Been there/done that!  Great advice-get after it once again!

Laney, at Nursing Student Chronicles discusses the wonders of putting classroom learning together in real-world patients.   Most of those things we do learn for a reason, although that can be hard to fathom while studying at 2AM.

See Jane Nurse writes about Bondage-now get your mind out of the gutter-not that kind of Bondage… well maybe not, you have to go read to find out.

End of Life Care, and conversations with family members involved is the topic of Torontoemerg’s latest post!

Head Nurse discusses blood drawing etiquette.

Hope you enjoyed reading this collection as much as I did!  Thanks to all the Nurse Bloggers who continue to write about their world!
