Best In Nurse Blogs: Low Census Edition!

Sunday, January 15th, 2012

The latest edition of the Best In Nurse Blogs-my bi-weekly focus on the best writing by, for, or about Nurses!

Best In Nurse Blogs:

Walking the halls of my local hospital on Friday, it seemed so quiet…The nurses said the census was low, low, low even in ICU.  I’m sure the ER was busy, but I don’t go there unless called.  It’s bad karma.  No flu has hit our part of the state.  The economy has just about eliminated any elective procedures.

My contacts in other parts of the country say the same thing.

Hostess Bankruptcy: Will it improve diabetics' glucose control?

This will be an interesting year in health care.

For now let’s just focus on…..

The Best Nursing Blogs:

I don’t usually pick a top post for my Best In Nurse Blogs, ’cause it’s not a competition.   But you need to go read JParadisiRN’s list post cause it’s too damn funny.  She says she doesn’t know who wrote the list, wish it was me!

Impacted Nurse has 50 tips to have a more productive 2012.

Free webinar with continuing education credits at Infusion Nurse.

Dying Alone is the topic at Those Emergency Blues.  Glad to have you back JD. We’ve missed you.

Keith at Digital Doorway has a book review.

Running Wildly had a virus and had a smashed Kindle.…that’s piling on.  But now she has a Kobo-need to check that out-(I downloaded the app on my iPhone)…  Sick nurses are the worst.  Yes, they’ll admit it too!

AJN has a review of an article about central venous pressure and clinical decisions.  Interesting stuff.

The Nerdy Nurse is giving financial tips, this one about saving money on eyeglasses.  (I better watch her, she’ll be taking over the personal finance advice area….)

Correctional Nurse discusses food allergies.

Check out Sean’s post at Scrubs, detailing his long career in 6 words.  Great insight, and so true!

Remodeled Nursing Curriculum is the focus at The Nursing Show.

The Makings of A Nurse reminds all that the NELRP student loan payback program application deadline approaches.  If you want to know more about the NELRP, check out this post.

Nursetopia discusses painless needles.

Thanks for reading!

Please take a moment to visit these great nursing blogs.  They are a talented bunch of writers who love what they do.  And this is just a small portion of what’s out there in the Nursing Blogosphere.  Please let me know if you are a nurse blogger and think you belong on my blogroll!

Reader questions:

What’s going on with the numbers at your facility? Is the census low or are you busting it?  (With personnel numbers being controlled, you may be busting it even with a low census.  Getting by with less is the new mantra.)

Best Of Nurse Blogs: New Years Edition!

Sunday, January 1st, 2012

The latest edition of the Best In Nurse Blogs-my bi-weekly focus on the best writing by, for, or about Nurses!

Best In Nurse Blogs:

I hope everyone had a safe New Year’s Eve and are looking forward to a great productive 2012!  Man, that is hard to write, Two Thousand Twelve.  I haven’t had a spare minute lately between family coming and going and work responsibilities to write my yearly goals but I will be doing that soon and publicize it here.

New Year's Eve Peach Drop in Atlanta

It makes you pay more attention to your goals if you make them public to thousands .  So if you want to put your primary goal this year in the comments go for it.  I will help hold you accountable!

Let’s get started with

Best In Nursing Blogs!

AJN has their top ten posts of 2011.

At Your Cervix writes about breast feeding in public.  I happen to completely agree with her opinion and wish the best nutrition for babies wasn’t such a big deal.

The Nerdy Nurse discusses the recent Goodwill Store discovery of protected patient information mixed with junk from a medical practice.  We buy a new heavy duty shredder every year to deal with the no longer needed paper.

Too much intensive care is the topic at My Strong Medicine.  This is an investigation into Medicare spending with a focus on intensive and other inappropriate care in the waning days of life.  A discussion that needs to happen if Medicare is to remain viable.

Running Wildly has an interesting version of a Christmas song altered for a New Years ER working Eve party.

Dangers during the holidays for correctional nurses is the topic at Correctional Nurse.  I’m sure it’s a lot easier to let your guard down this time of year.

The Nurse Practitioner’s Place reiterates the quality of care given by NP’s.  The “look” of primary care will have to change if we are going to be able to afford health care in the future.

Having a Theme Word for 2012 to supplement your goals is a great idea discussed by Barbara at the Nurse Practitioner’s Business Blog.  I will have to think a little harder cause right now “tired” just doesn’t seem to be the right word….

Nursetopia already has her one word for 2012-Completion!  great word and worthy goal.  I’m jealous.

JParadisiRN serves up her goals in a Mason Jar.  Sounds like something a southerner would do to me…..

Infusion Nurse starts an IV on Santa…..Cute stuff!

Nurse Keith is beginning a coaching career!  Good luck and I would love to support you in any way I can!

Impacted Nurse has Felt Testicles, and art too!  Ballsy huh?

Thanks

Thanks to all of you for helping me have a great year here at the Millionaire Nurse Blog.  Our readership has more than doubled this year and I owe it all to you guys!

Best In Nurse Blogs: “Live and Let Live” Award Edition!

Sunday, December 11th, 2011

The latest edition of the Best In Nurse Blogs-my bi-weekly focus on the best writing by, for, or about Nurses!

Best In Nurse Blogs:

J. Paradisi RN deserves the first annual Nurse Blogger  “Live and Let Live” award for her aplomb regarding the hijacking of her nom de plume.

"Live And Let Live" Award!

All of us bloggers get used to spam-like links and stolen blog posts.  You would never get anything done trying to undo all that.

Having a relationship and sex advice blog with your name and avatar attached though  is a little much.

J. handles it with grace and a little more than a little sexual innuendo of her own.  (I counted 10, but then was wondering if it was just my dirty mind…)

Find the link below!

Good Stuff!

Let’s get started with the

Best in Nursing Blogs.

Running Wildly describes running and dancing wildly.  How appropriate…..We all need to learn to live  more in the moment.

Limiting interruptions to decrease medication errors is at Correctional Nurse.  Lorry makes a great point, though getting a little quiet time in almost any work environment is difficult.

The Nurse Practitioner’s Place loves students, and makes a plea to her patients in the same post.  Diagnosing cancer at the holidays is truly a bitch.  I’m with you on that one!

Barbara discusses goals and the common reasons for their complete failure to be achieved at The Nurse Practitioner’s Business Blog.

Nurse Teeny is diagnosing herself at The Makings of a Nurse, why don’t you go throw in your two cents, I did! (with the appropriate disclaimer for the lawyers!)

Nursetopia wants to know if you have a medically related tattoo?  Please let her know, so far no takers…

Nurse Ratched gives advice and a little mini-rant about forcing ADN’s to go back to school.  What say you?

The Nerdy Nurse goes Hollywood on us.…Congrats you’re a credit to the profession.  (and a fellow Georgian!)

Wanderer at Lost On The Floor wins one! Congrats…..

jParadisiRN takes the high road when her name gets hijacked.  Great sense of x-rated humor!

Hypokalemia, is the name of the post. Stone Cold Heart (yea I added the “cold” part, makes it sound like a wrestler huh…) is what’s keepin “K” at Crass-Pollination up at night!

The importance of muscle training as you age is stressed by this post at AJN.  Every decade you age, should see a rise in the percentage of time spent on weight bearing exercise, say the Docs at Cooper Clinic.  When you are in your fifties-fifty percent of exercise should be weight bearing vs aerobic.

Sean at My Strong Medicine has an apology about his Thankful Thursdays…It’s ok Sean, none of us are perfect, and while you’re here, what are your thoughts on weight training for older folks?

You can watch the video premier of  “The Murses” an action packed thriller featuring male nurse super heroes at Impacted Nurse.  Ian even has an interview with one of the actors murses.

Thanks for reading!

Another fortnight has passed since the last Best In Nurse Blogs, and the next edition should be up on New Years Day-provided my New Years Eve partying is not too too much…..(since I’m on call, I’ll prolly be sitting in front of the fireplace, as I am now, drinking coffee and listening to music…)

Happy Holidays to all!

Best In Nurse Blogs: Thanksgiving ER Visit Edition!

Sunday, November 27th, 2011

The latest edition of the Best In Nurse Blogs-my bi-weekly focus on the best writing by, for, or about Nurses!

Best In Nurse Blogs:

Another Thanksgiving is “in the books” as they say.  It was a mixed day.  We had a great meal and visit with my extended family.  In the middle of the afternoon, however, my Aunt collapsed in the kitchen.  She is fine now, though shaky.  It appears to have been a syncopal episode related to her longstanding arrythmia-with a concussion from the fall.

No contextual concept here, just loved the photo!

It looked much worse at the time.

There’s nothing like EMS beep beep beeping as they back into the driveway, and an ER visit on Thanksgiving!  Thanks to those dedicated professionals who were working that holiday.

It certainly does remind  why we call it Thanksgiving, and I’m grateful my Aunt  ok.

Best RN Blogs:

A lot of great blog posts in this version of The Best of Nurse Blogs.  Take your time, fix a cup of coffee or hot tea, curl up, and read some great stories!

Crass Pollination has one she hasn’t seen before.  Daring!

Digital Doorway: Keith reviews a Nursing Drug book for 2012.

Phil, at Health is Social as usual has a thoughtful post on the difference between evolution and revolution-health care, of course, is the topic.

Kim at Emergiblog has a Rank and File Rant!  Good read.

Nurstopia asks why you wouldn’t want to start training for a 1/2 marathon?  Sure, why wouldn’t you?

Karin, at Nurse Web Log, is bravely facing breast cancer.  Our thoughts and prayers are with her!  Good luck, and fight like hell!

Our Stomachs are touching-made me laugh….by Sean at My Strong Medicine.  I wish I couldn’t relate, that I’d been strong, but alas, not to be.

The Nursing Show discusses virtual nurses-online.

Barbara at Nurse Practitioner Business Blog writes about waiting reception rooms.

Those Emergency Blues has an AWESOME story!  Cool, no really, cool, hypothermia cool, pretty kewl huh?

Old, Running Wildly thinks she’s old.  Do I have news for her….

ER Nurse Joy’s Tumblr is always worth a look, love it, love it, love it.

Head Nurse has a great list of “the way it is isms….”  I recognize them all. She tells it like it is.

Imagine an Image-Andy reviews an app for pulse tracking.

If you are tired of Facebook, Ian reviews Google+ at Impacted Nurse.

Infusion Nurse has a great review of basics of IV’s, always pays to review.  It’s easy to pick up bad habits.

iMatch has let Not Nurse Ratched down.  And she seems to be pissed about it.  But maybe I’m exaggerating, naahhh…

In the vein of “we are always serious at work, we’re in health care” check out jParadisiRN’s Turkey Mask.

Congrats to the Wanderer at Lost on the Floor for his 501′st post.  It is a true milestone, the longer I blog, the more I appreciate the folks who’ve been at it for years.

The Nerdy Nurse shares a few of her Black Friday deals.  That luggage set sounds like a great buy!

Nurse Ratched writes about the sacrifices of veterans.

Thanks to all of you, readers and writers, who have sacrificed your family time to help others.

I’m proud to be a supporter, cheerleader, and trusted adviser of the nursing profession.

And remember if you read and love, or write a nurse blog that you think is worthy to be on my blogroll, leave a comment.  I would be honored to add it!

Best In Nurse Blogs: Curmudgeon Edition!

Sunday, November 13th, 2011

The latest edition of the Best In Nurse Blogs-my bi-weekly focus on the best writing by, for, or about Nurses!

Best In Nurse Blogs:

The first few highlighted posts are from a few of the nurses that attended Blogworld Expo-healthcare track.

After my experiences at Fincon11, my first meeting with fellow personal finance bloggers, I am sold on the importance of meeting and learning from our fellow bloggers.  This is not unlike the importance of continuing education in our “real” professions.

There is only so much you can get from reading-whether from a book or a computer.

I’ll do my best to be at the next one!

A Loveable Curmudgeon

Let’s get started with:

The Best Nursing Blogs:

Nerdy Nurse posts 10 things a healthcare blogger can learn at the Blogworld Expo.  Her comments extend to any blogger, or writer for that matter.  Curmudgeons seem to be a theme here.

Kim at Emergiblog was also at Blogworld.  Kim is the first nurse blogger to “speak” to me when I first started blogging so I still have a crush on her….(my wife even knows and approves….) Kim, though, loves Kasey Kane.

Nurse Ratched’s Place  is home to a curmedgeon at BlogWorld,  too. But I’m sure a friendly one.

And The best of the Rest:

RN Blogs

Toronto Emerg writes about the persistent difficulties remaining in adequate pain treatment.

Death is on the mind of Running Wildly, but not morbidly so….

Impacted Nurse suggests we become more at ease with ourselves.  Love the sentiment, and I doooo try.

Nursetopia gives tips on resumes and interviews.

Hanging in jails, a depressing but too real topic in correctional nursing@ Correctional Nurse.

Sean at My Strong Medicine is complimentary to physicians.  Yeah, that’s not a typo.  During my interview process for my residency, I was careful to note the teaching environment.  I chose one that was based on mutual respect, which was not common at that time.  Great reminder, we can all learn from each other.

codeblog writes about Touch.  Very touching indeed!

Thanks!

This post is a little shorter than usual.  My wife and I are off for a long weekend together.  Will write about it later, well, at least part of it. ;)

Thanks so much for visiting, reading, and “tweeting” please!!!!

Best In Nurse Blogs: Dog Invasion Edition!

Sunday, October 30th, 2011

The latest edition of the Best In Nurse Blogs-my bi-weekly focus on the best writing by, for, or about Nurses!

Best In Nurse Blogs:

We just had a visit from my children and the dogs.  Both my kids are animal lovers and they married animal lovers.  That means, at least so far, that instead of cleaning up after a visit from grandchildren, we are cleaning up after grand-dogs.

We had about 400 lbs of dogs here for a few days, and I felt like a cross between the Dad in Cheaper by the Dozen, and the Father of the Bride.  In other words all hell was breaking lose, over which I had no control.

Stormy and Nova

We’ve just about  vacuumed up all the hair, swept up the scattered dog food, scooped the poop, swiped up the drool, and cloroxed the blood (yes we had a dog fight!)

Maybe we’ll just disappear to the coast for Christmas (just kiddin kids….)

Let’s get started on The Best Nurse Blogs:

Travel nursing on steroids-At AJN a post about Nursing down under-mate!

Keith at Digital Doorway, gives his take on the Occupy Movement.  A thoughtful discussion, without name calling, is the only way to make positive changes.     What’s your take?

Not Ratched is describing  unknown forces of the universe occurring in the ER.

At Your Cervix writes about grazing, a common cause of calorie Kamikaze.

Feminism responsible for the ills of nursing? That question discussed at Impacted Nurse.

Focus on change- a competition-is the focus at Nurse with a Heart. Good luck.

J.ParadisiRN squiggles her way to success,or succeses her way to squiggles…  Improvements are rarely a straight line, either in your life or your career.  Oh, and check out the fern pic on the home page while you’re there-cool.

Zoe and Lucy (human unidentified)

Voceras is the subject at Codeblog.   Yeah you’ll have to go read it to find out what the hell Voceras is.

Crass-Pollination writes a detective story.  Ya never know what you’ll read here.

Lost on The Floor discusses Coincidences.  His skepticism is, shall we say, ripe-or maybe right.

My Strong Medicine-Sean discusses pain and tattoos.  And sounds like he should know.

A Rant about the Forever Lazy is at the Nerdy Nurse.  Why don’t you model one for  a new Avatar???

Another rant-lite from Terri at Nurse Story: Why aren’t you a member of Sigma Theta Tau, an international nursing organization?  Go there and see what’s up.

Nursetopia has written about a sign, not a zodiac sign, or a sign from heaven, just a sign.  Check it out.  She has a rant on her blog too, but I didn’t want to have “an all-rant” Best of Nurse Blogs, though that may be a good theme sometime….

After all the ranting, how ’bout a little poetry at Toronto Emerg.

To Cry or Not To Cry, a poignant story at Running Wildly.

Thanks for reading the latest version of The Best in Nurse Blogs, and if you have a favorite nurse blogger, shout it out in the comments. And if you are a blogging nurse and not on my blogroll, shout it out.
