Friday Financial Follies: Pro Football Lives Edition!

Friday, July 22nd, 2011

The Friday Financial Follies are designed to summarize the important financial issues of the week.

  • Share the humor of those that are funny.
  • Make fun of the stupid.
  • Highlight those you need to be aware of if you want to be financially well-grounded or is it well-rounded???

This Weeks Financial News:

Apple has amassed cash in the bank of 76 BILLION.   Larger than the economy of many countries of the world.  What will Steve Jobs do with all that cash?  Maybe loan it to the feds when we hit the debt ceiling…..

Jobless claims at 418,000…Above estimates again….Not Good!

The prescription benefit company Express Scrips is proposing a buyout of Medco for 29 billion. The healthcare market is undergoing a huge upheaval due to Obama-care.  There will be further consolidation as businesses try to figure out how to make a profit…

Angry Birds has jumped from a popular video game to back-to-school logo’d gear.  I hope the company enjoys the popularity as these trends tend to disappear as fast as they start!  Maybe Steve Jobs can share with em how to save  their cash…

The business news is filled with stories on Rupert Murdoch, the CEO of News Corp.  One of his many holdings, the now defunct News Of The World tabloid was guilty of using phone hackers, and bribing the police in England to get story info.   I wonder how many other newspapers will be found guilty of a similar practice when all is said and done.  His conservative leanings are not helping him with the European media….He seemed to be a little out of touch during his questioning in front of the British Parliament.

A neat info-graphic on the new and controversial Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is at CNN/money.

US taxpayers lost an estimated 1.3 Billion Dollars on the Chrysler Motors bailout.

The heatwave hammering the country will lead to increased utility costs, in addition to complaints about summer school without AC, rolling  blackouts, and roasted turkeys...

What not to do if you buy a lemon of a used car, unless you want to be wearing an orange jumpsuit…”I got my point across!” has to be the understatement of the year!

The stock market has been up nicely all week, but as I write this the Dow Jones Average remains 5% or so below the high this year reached  May 2nd.

And finally for you NFL sports fans, the owners voted to end the lockout.  Saving professional football for this fall….Not a big surprise considering the owners were facing billions in losses if the season was lost.

Great reads in personal finance this week:

Craig at Money Help For Christians gives tips for being a super-hero. I liked  “paying respect to your elders” as I’m fast becoming one!

Electric cars aren’t the green savior they’re made out to be, according to Beating the Index. Batteries, it’s the batteries stupid!

If your listings on Craig’s List are just sitting there like fleas on a swamp cur, maybe you should read Sandy’s tips at First Gen American.

Joe at Personal Finance by the Book gives great tips on kids and cars. Where were you 12 years ago when I needed help???

The Wealth Artisan shares Time Vampires.…I’ve got a coupla nicks on my neck.  Maybe they’ll heal now that I know what’s out there…..

Being embarrassed about getting 800 bucks from the IRS is the topic of a guest post at Barbara Friedberg.  Wish they would embarrass me a little…Where you headed Barbara???

Thanks for being a reader!  I’ve got a new goal…. My friend Len Penzo surpasses 1,000,000 page views this week. Congrats!  Stop by and tell him Dr Dean sent ya! (what does surpasses mean Len???)

Spending Urges: I Don’t Have No Stinkin Spending Urges!!!

Saturday, April 24th, 2010

Once a week, I try to share with my readers interesting personal finance information/blog posts that I have enjoyed reading.

This week’s personal finance reader:

Financial Samuri gives us a good exercise to help us understand, and deal with our insatiable spending urges!  Great idea-try it and see what you come up with.

More Style Than Cash, has written about saving money with your gardening-the pictures are worth the trip to the link-check it out!!!!!

Barbara Friedberg Personal Finance has posted how to BUY LOW-when investing in mutual funds.  I agree with most of her recommendations, so see what you think.

Redeeming Riches uses Dora, the Explorer to make the case for improving your finances- I guess this is kind of like Sponge Bob’s cousin????

The Mighty Bargain Hunter, has this suggestion to help decide to add dental insurance during open enrollment.  If you have that option, it makes great sense!

Fiscal Fizzle, has this procrastination list going at his site….you may want to read it now, or put it off till later…..

Hope you enjoyed  this array of posts/personal finance websites-I did!!!

Financial Stories

It has been another great week of reading here in the personal finance blogosphere.  Take a few minutes to check out these posts.  They are some of my favorites of the week.

Christian Common Sense has written about NETFLIX and the financial advantages of using it over cable or satellite. I would consider it, except for watching The Masters golf tourney, and my other sports stuff.  I watch it less and less, but am not sure I could completely do without!!!!

The Saved Quarter has written about efforts to cut their cell bill. Worthy of your time to review.  I did a review of BillShrink, the service he used to help cut his plan, that you can find here. Great place to visit and run your numbers.

For a story about co-signing loans or loaning money to others, check out this post from Bible Debt.

And while we are on that subject, check out Couple Money’s thoughts on the matter!

And don’t  read this post, about making homemade pizza, if you are hungry, courtesy of Eliminate the Muda.

And finally this from Free Money Finance, a post about how buying a new car is sometimes not as evil as I have discussed here.  For my take on new cars, check out this rant from the past!

Have a great weekend!  The weather is fine, here in the south.

Happy Valentines Day-Along With a Few Great Personal Finance Reads!

Sunday, February 14th, 2010

Now I know it is Valentines Day.  But since I wrote a post about Valentines Day last week, I wanted to do something different today.

Happy Valentines Day from all of us at The Millionaire Nurse Blog!

You know, I guess I am schizophrenic.  I blog/speak/write about personal finance.  My beloved audience is nurses-well mostly nurses-I have found a lot of non-nurse readers lurking, behind the curtain.

So am I a Doctor, writing in the personal finance genre, for nurses?  Or is my blog about nursing, written by a Doctor married to a wonderful nurse, and talking about money?   I also am a money coach for Frugal Lawyers.

I am also a gynecologist, blogging for nurses , trying to teach money management tools so they can focus on what they love-nursing.

While I am busy trying to figure out what the heck is going on, I will give you some personal finance reads to help you learn from others.

Revanche, at a Gai Shan Life has a contest going on, with budget software as the prize, and also a recent post about pets and money.  I couldn’t decide which to link to, so I linked to her site.  You choose what you want to read!

Smart Money Daily has this recitation of why Dave Ramsey doesn’t like HELOC’s.  If you don’t know what a HELOC is-that is a good thing-maybe you shouldn’t read this post and become tempted…..

The Digirati Life, has this post about a vacation to Disney Land!  No she wasn’t the superhero of the Super Bowl- but because of good planning and frugality-they are going anyway!

Trent at The Simple Dollar, has discussed deflation, and hyperinflation in this post-it is good to think about what the future may hold-although we can’t change it, we can be prepared-at least as much as possible.

I think that is enough-considering it’s Valentines Day-you better be taking care of your honey, instead of spending too much time reading blogs-and if you don’t have a honey-maybe you really need to be doing something besides reading……
